Seacroft Golf Club

What we say

Seacroft Golf Club might be the best course you’ve never heard of.

This might be the best course you’ve never heard of. And even if you’ve heard of it, you might not know much about it, and haven’t resolved to play it one day. You really should.

Unassuming Seacroft makes some big-name courses look deeply uninteresting.

Founded in 1895 but properly set down by Willie Fernie of Troon in 1900, it is a links of enormous character and even more variety. It keeps rising in our English Top 100, with the work of Golf World Top 100 panellist Clyde Johnson – an architect and shaper who is part of Tom Doak’s team – enhancing Seacroft further. We’ve also named it the best golf course in Britain and Ireland that you can play for £60 or under.

Fernie used the parallel dune ridges brilliantly to create holes that fit beautifully into the rugged links terrain that are hugely entertaining yet also still sensible challenges.

In the first four holes alone you play alongside, onto, up and over, and from one to another of the ridges.

That isn’t the best sequence either. The three from the 7th are epic and the back nine starts with a terrific short hole. The 11th green, with its difficult-to-access lower-right bowl, is wonderfully crafted and then the strategic 13th is one of my favourite par 5s in England. No, Britain.

That starts another magnificent three-hole run and although it ends on a lower note, it is hard to imagine anyone wouldn’t have had plenty enough for the ludicrously low green fee.

  • 3 out of 5 Not as good as I hoped

    By Grant Allfree

Turned up with a society, made welcome in the club house, played the course and was a little let down, greens and fairways very inconsistent, lots of blind shots and for a top 100 course not what I was hoping for? Sorry Skeggy.

  • 4 out of 5 what a course

Much easier to play now than it was a few years ago... and it;s a cracker. Breat variety of holes and some really brain-teasers. Most of the greens are massive so hitting them is not the hard part... two-putting is!!! A real treat. The par 3s are tough and with lots of lumps and bumps all over the place (greens and fairways) every shot requires thought. It's the sort of place that you need to know your way round a bit so the nfirst visit is a touchie. But it's a great course that you can now poay for sensible money. A must for any links lover!

Apart from the initially un-welcoming pro shop experience this is perfect golf - great course, history, good (enough) weather and great company. Apart from a slightly disappointing last hole I couldn't say anything other than you SHOULD play here.
