What we say...

Our in-depth Shot Scope Pro L2 Laser Rangefinder review found the 2023 upgrade to be accurate, easy to use, and exceptional value for money.

Shot Scope have cemented themselves in recent years as a manufacturer of high-quality golf accessories. The Pro L2’s predecessor, Pro L1, had been among our best golf rangefinders since its launch in 2021, but the brand’s latest model is even better.

Not only does it have more tech, it has a substantially lower RRP of £149.99/£$149.99, making it almost 25 percent cheaper than the L1 was at launch. When you consider a top-end Bushnell or Garmin rangefinder that will cost you at least twice that price, it really is impressive.

Shot Scope have built a big reputation in the world of distance measuring devices, and the L2 is their second new product launch in 2023, following hot on the heels of the X5 GPS and Performance Tracking Watch.

We put both products through rigorous tests ahead of their launch to help make your buying decision as easy as possible.

Shot Scope Pro L2 Rangefinder: The Tech

– Slide button easily turns slope technology on and off instantly

– Extra strong magnet makes it easy to attach to your golf buggy or trolley

– Rapid-fire technology ensures quick and accurate distances

– Target-lock vibration lets you know when you lock onto the flag

– Measures up to 700 yards, accurate to one yard

– Six-times magnification

The Shot Scope Pro L2 Laser Rangefinder is compact.

What Shot Scope say about the Pro L2 Laser

“In the span of a few weeks, Shot Scope has introduced two innovative products that will have a direct, positive impact on game and course management for golfers of all playing levels,” said David Hunter, Shot Scope CEO.

“The X5 Smart Watch is truly a game changer in the industry and now the launch of Pro L2 provides golfers with an unmatched laser rangefinder, filled with high-tech features at an incredible price point.

“It was the natural progression from our very successful Pro L1, and as a brand, we continue to strive to provide a product to suit the needs of every single golfer at a very competitive price.

“The rangefinder is a brilliant refinement of its predecessor, giving golfers a rangefinder they can trust out on the course. Its reliability, functionality and accuracy make it a great addition to any player’s bag.”

The Shot Scope Pro L2 Laser Rangefinder's case is impressively secure.

Shot Scope Pro L2 Rangefinder Review: Our Verdict

Note to self. Always check over the equipment and read the instructions. Firstly the included battery is already in the rangefinder, but it is in a plastic wrapper that needs removing, so don’t follow me and start cursing ‘cheap batteries’ when it’s actually a user error.

Secondly, not all rangefinders are the same. I’m so used to tapping the button on my older Nikon that I thought the Shot Scope wasn’t working. But the Pro L2 requires you to press and hold the button when you’ve got your target in its sights. A clear vibration indicates that it’s locked on and the yardage, in your choice of yards or meters (easily changeable at the tap of the top button), is clearly displayed on the screen. You may find that you don’t get a vibration if you aren’t focusing on something as specific as a flag, but you will still get a measurement, which is particularly useful if you’re seeking a distance to a hazard or dog-leg.

Pace and precision

Distances are impressively quick and accurate – and it does meet Shot Scope’s promise to measure 700 yards – handy if you want to work out how high a bird is flying but, in our experience, rarely required on the course. I compared the Pro L2 with my playing partner’s Bushnell across 18 holes and the Pro L2 was always within a yard of its more expensive rival and fired back the distance in an equally impressive time.

Shot Scope’s adjustable focusing ring ensures you can bring any target into sharp view, or adjust the device to suit your eyesight, and the ability to swap between sloped and non-sloped distances at the flick of the side switch ensures the Pro L2 is usable in competitions.

It’s a compact rangefinder (about two-thirds the length of my iPhone 14 Pro and half the width), but the rippled texture to the outer casing meant I never felt at risk of losing grip, and I was able to get measurements easily using just one hand.

Considering the low price, it has a quality look and feel. In my opinion, the grey option looks more expensive than the blue option. The only areas that let it down are the plastic slope button and battery cover, which feel a little cheap, but that’s a very minor complaint.

The Shot Scope Pro L2 case is robust and has a host of attachment options.

Robust and secure

The case is excellent. Robust to keep your tech safe, it has a belt loop or a carabiner to allow you to secure it to your bag. Then there are three levels of security to ensure your rangefinder doesn’t fall out – a strong elasticated internal strap stops the case from opening too wide, a zipper and an external elasticated strap that loops over a metal stud to keep the case closed (but ensure your rangefinder is still easily accessible if you want to keep the zip open during your round). As someone who has spent many a panicked moment running back down a fairway (okay, through the rough!) searching for my dropped Nikon, this was a really useful touch.

For those of you who use buggies, the Pro L2 has a ridiculously strong magnet, allowing you to attach it to the side of your cart. It proved impressively secure, even when I attempted to get it to fall from the side of the cart by taking the most undulating routes and unstable paths. Only a hanging tree branch managed to slightly move it from its position.

The magnet on the Shot Scope Pro L2 is impressively strong.

Shotscope have thought of everything security-wise, with a small piece of rubber ensuring the battery cover, which is really easy to remove and replace, won’t separate from the device.

And there’s even a cloth included to keep the lenses clean and dry.

Overall, if there’s a better rangefinder at this price than the Shot Scope Pro L2, I’m yet to use it.
