Jason Day reveals Augusta request in bid to avoid another Masters controversy

It was one of the biggest talking points of last year’s Masters, and now Jason Day says he must ‘get clearance’ ahead of this year’s tournament.

Jason Day stole the show on the opening two days of last year’s Masters with his controversial Malbon outfits. His baggy trousers were widely discussed during the opening round, and he was ordered to remove a knitted sweater vest because some officials at Augusta National said “it wasn’t appropriate for the Masters”.

Jason Day's Malbon sweater vest reportedly drew a warning from Augusta officials.

The Australian signed with Malbon at the beginning of 2024, and has since made waves in the golfing world for his bold outfits. However, at Augusta, it’s all about tradition, rules, and subtlety.

So, to avoid the same fate this year, the former World No.1 and Malbon have had to submit their outfit ideas in the hope they’ll be approved for the 2025 Masters.

Speaking to Beyond the Clubhouse Podcast at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Day said: “We have to get clearance on the scripting this year. We’re trying. To Malbon’s credit, they’ve got some bold stuff, but I’m not sure if it’ll pass.

“We’ll see how it goes. Hopefully, they’ll say yes. If not, then we’ll be going back to the drawing board and trying to come up with something different.”

Day also told GolfWRX, “Augusta is a little crazy. Fingers crossed, they’re going to let me wear some of the stuff.

“I’m a little bit bipolar when it comes to my outfits. It’s nice to not look like everyone else. Like today, I don’t look like anyone else, which is nice. I’ve put this together, and a lot of the outfits I do. They have a scripting team at Malbon, but I also end up putting my own flavor on it, too, which is good.”
