The Americans didn’t have too much to get excited about in last September’s Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland where they took one helluva beating at the hands of the rampant Europeans. But US wildcard Scott Verplank at least had something to celebrate, becoming the first American to score a hole-in-one in the 80-year history of the Ryder Cup.
Verplank holed out on the 14th during his 4&3 singles success over local hero Padraig Harrington, a shot honoured by the legendary Arnie Palmer who presented Verplank with a signed replica image of the 213-yards par 3.
Arnie handed over the framed image before the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Orlando, which started in Florida today (thurs). The photo was produced by the K Club and the Golf Business, the company that compiled the venue’s official course guide.
