TG took on former top soccer ref Graham Poll in our monthly duel for the coveted ‘TG Tenner’ at The Grove in Hertfordshire. It proved a one-sided encounter – to see who came out on top check out the November issue of the magazine.
However, what we will reveal is that Poll, who hung up his whistle at the end of last season after a highly controversiual, incident-packed career, was on his very best behaviour although the 19 handicapper admitted to losing it a few times on the course in the past.
But he insisted: “I’ve never argued with a ruling even when I had my handicap cut after posting the winning score in the midweek medal at my club, only to be disqualified for playing the wrong course!”
After our game, Poll gave us – and you via these video clips – an insight into his golfing world and at the same time even dished out some handy golfing tips…
Poll will go down in history as one of soccer’s most controversial refs, the man himself shocking the football world by retiring at the end of last season not long after his infamous three card trick at the 2006 World Cup in Germany where he initially failed to send off a Croatian player he’d cautioned three times.
Poll has just had a book, Seeing Red, published and during his spare time is likely to appear in a number of charity golf events, specially for children’s charity SPARKS.
