Richie Ramsay made an encouraging start to life as a professional on Thursday, with a solid opening round of 70 at the Russian Open.

The Moscow event is the US Amateur champion’s first outing as a pro after making the leap from the amateur ranks last week.

The 24-year-old Scot started at the 10th and made seven consecutive birdies before making a birdie four at the par-five 17th. He dropped back to level par on the first hole, his 10th, but two more birdies on the fifth and the seventh gave him a two-under-par total.

Sweden’s Christian Nilsson is the early first-round leader after he fired a superb seven-under par 65. Sam Little is England’s best-placed representative currently, following his 67.
