Bob Charles to play PGA Seniors Championship

By Kit Alexander

Former Open champion Bob Charles will be playing in the PGA Seniors Championship at De Vere Slaley Hall from August 21-24.

The 72-year-old will tee it up alongside the likes of Sam Torrance and Costantino Rocca in the hunt for the record prize fund of £300,000.

The New Zealander has won 75 professional tournaments worldwide and was the first left-hander to lift the Claret Jug when he triumphed at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1963.

“Many things keep me going, not one thing in particular,” said Charles. “I love the game of golf and I don’t have any aches or pains. I’m in terrific shape for 72 years of age and I enjoy the competition.

“I aim to be competitive and my ambition now is to beat my age each round I play and to play consistent golf.”
