Defending champion Retief Goosen has been forced out of this week’s Qatar Masters with an eye problem.

The two-time Major winner underwent laser eye surgery recently but is still feeling the effects ahead of the Doha event which features nine of the world’s top 25 players.

The South African said: “I am obviously very sad that I am unable to defend my title. It’s a shame as I love this event, love this course and I can’t remember the last time I pulled out of a tournament.”

Goosen has since returned to London for further treatement on the troublesome eye.

“I thought it would come good but it hasn’t. I went to Dubai and the advice was to go back to London,” the 38-year-old added.
Despite Goosen’s absence, the event will still host a stellar field, with Adam Scott, Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia all involved.
