It’s now 32 major championships since a European won one of the big ones; and counting… In the end it was another disappointing week for the record 28 Euros who teed it up on Thursday.

Despite leading after the first round through Nick Dougherty, and having two other Englishmen (Justin Rose and Paul Casey) just off the lead going into the final round, none of them could muster a challenge down the stretch.

Indeed, it was left to Sweden’s Niclas Fasth to be leading European, after shooting a final round 70 to be 7-over-par for the week, two shots behind Cabrera.

For a while it looked as though Nick Dougherty, who posted 10-over-par for the tournament as the leaders were just making the turn, might even have a chance of a playoff, so fast was everyone coming back to him.

“I thought if I could have played the back nine in three under I would have a chance,” said the Englishman. “I played a lot better today. It’s been a tough week for me emotionally. I was exhausted last night after playing with Tiger and have never felt like that coming off a course before. But, I’ve done myself proud this week.”

Europeans to make the cut:

Niclas Fasth 4th 287 (+7)
Nick Dougherty T7th 290 (+10)
Justin Rose T10th 291 (+11)
Paul Casey T10th (+11)

Lee Westwood T36 (+18)
Ian Poulter T36 (+18)
Kenneth Ferrie T42 (+19)
Jose Maria Olazabal T45 (+20)
Anders Hansen T55 (+20)
