A new and prestigious charity golf tournament which will raise cash for local youngsters is to be played next month.
The inaugural Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy celebrity amateur golf tournament at Slaley Hall, Northumbria, is part of a celebrity-packed series of events. Two teams of sports personalities, stars of stage and screen will do battle in top sporting arenas across the region – including one being planned for St James’ Park, with Alan Shearer and Jack Charlton as team managers.
The Challenge will see teams representing the North and South of the region go head-to-head under the colours of the team presidents, His Grace, The Duke of Northumberland and The Right Honourable Earl of Durham, Lord Durham.
The celebrity tournament at Slaley will involve 80 players for either the Duke or the Earl – including a celebrity captain in each of the 20 fourball matches over 18 holes oo the Hunting Course.
Two world class athletes have been confirmed as team coaches across all four Challenge Trophy events – golf, cricket, shooting and football. They are Jonathan Edwards for the Duke’s team and Steve Cram for the Earl of Durham’s team.
Already confirmed participants include ex-Newcastle United players Peter Beardsley, Rob Lee and John Berresford, as well as Sunderland Football Club chairman Niall Quinn, England and County Durham cricket star Steve Harmison.
Limited places for members of the public are available at £500 a head.
David Beavis, regional director for The Prince’s Trust, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play golf with some very high profile celebrities while contributing towards a great cause. All profits made will go towards the work The Prince’s Trust does with disadvantaged young people living in the North East.
