Laura Davies made a fine start to the LPGA Championship at Bulle Rock by firing a first-round 68 to lie just a shot adrift of leaders Birdie Kim, Angela Park and Kim Saiki-Maloney.

The Briton won the title back in 1994 and 1996 and picked up seven birdies at the Maryland course on her way to a four-under-par round.

Annika Sorenstam also made a decent start to the second women’s Major of the season by shooting a two-under-par 70, but defending champion Se Ri Pak didn’t have the best of days, posting a one-over par 73.

Michelle Wie, who caused controversy last week by walking out of the Ginn Tribute event, also ended the day on one over.
