The long-term future may look bright for Michelle Wie but the short-term is anything but: the teenage sensation has been ruled out of next week’s Kraft Nabisco Championship while she recovers from a wrist injury, the first LPGA Tour major championship she has missed in two years.
It’s a bitter blow for the 17-year-old who injured her left wrist during a fall last month.
“While the rehabilitation of her wrist is on schedule, Michelle wants to make sure she gives fans everything she can the next time she steps on the course. And she’ s not there yet,” confirmed a spokesperson for the Wie camp.
In fact Wie has played only once this year, missing the cut by 14 shots at the Sony Open on the PGA Tour.
A year ago, she had a chance to win the Kraft Nabisco with a 25-foot eagle chip from just off the 18th green. It went 10 feet by the hole, and she missed the birdie putt to get into a playoff.
Wie’s next appearance is expected to be in Orlando, Florida, the week after the US Masters. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how she fares on her comeback. After all the hype, it’s about time she started living up to expectations and delivering the goods where it matters most…out on the course.
