European Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie has reserved special praise for club manufacturers Yonex, after his new set of clubs gave him a timely distance boost at the recent World Cup of Golf.
The Scot, who went on to win the prestigious event at Mission Hills with Marc Warren, was delighted with his upgrade and he wasn’t the only one a bit surprised by the extra distance the clubs provided.
“On the three days we played with South Africa there were occasions when Retief Goosen, who is one of our longer hitters, was looking at me in mingled astonishment and disbelief. He was staggered that I was not just up with him off the tee but often hitting the shorter iron into the green.”
“I’m not about to pretend that it’s all down to the work I’ve been doing in the gym. The truth is that it’s down to the 2008 version of my clubs. Both with the woods and irons I’m getting an extra 20 yards.”
