Oct9 McIlroy

Norther Ireland golfing sensation Rory McIlroy can become the youngest ever player to feature in the Ryder Cup, according to manager Andrew “Chubby” Chandler.

McIlroy secured his European Tour card in just his second professional event when he finished third at last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Chandler is adamant that the 18-year-old can beat Sergio Garcia’s current record in next year’s event in Valhalla.

He told the Press Association: “I can’t see him playing in anything that does not carry cup points. I’ve told Rory that he has re-written what was being mapped out for him.”

Spaniard Garcia was 19 years and eight months when he made his first appearance in the legendary team competition at Brookline in 1999. If McIlroy did make captain Nick Faldo’s 12-man team, he would be four months Garcia’s junior.
