Eccleston Park Golf Club has joined forces with St Helens Council to develop grass roots golf for local youngsters – with the aim of becoming a centre of excellence in Merseyside.

The Rainhill-based club is playing a key role in the local authority’s School Sport Partnership in which secondary and primary schools work together to enhance the quality of opportunities for youngsters, including forging links with sports clubs.

Eccleston Park has embraced the scheme and is implementing a series of initiatives to improve youngsters’ access to golf.

Head Professional Bryan Joelson-Mulhall is spearheading the club’s involvement, which includes visiting local primary schools as part of the Government’s PE and School Sport Club Links strategy in addition to providing open sessions at the club where children can enjoy golf taster sessions without having to be a member.

Eccleston Park has also introduced a 90 percent reduction in the joining fee for junior members, is mentoring talented young players, and has held a family fun weekend, including a Tri-Golf festival for more than 150 youngsters aged between two and 12 years old, alongside coaching sessions.

Club Captain Derek Wright OBE is working alongside St Helens Council and England Golf Partners to pilot the Golf Leaders scheme in which so far 10 schoolchildren and 10 club committee members have volunteered more than 750 hours developing junior golf at Eccleston Park, in schools, and the wider community.
