His famous dad captures most of the headlines but Gary Alliss can create some of his own if he leads Great Britain & Ireland to victory in next week’s PGA Cup.
The Belfry head professional will captain a 10-man GB&I team as they bid to make history and defeat mighty America to retain the Llandudno Trophy in Georgia on Sept 21-23).
No team has ever won on US soil in 34 years of trying but there’s no shortage of confidence from Alliss ahead of the matches which take place over the Oconee Course at the magnificent Reynolds Plantation.
“I am confident of winning, we have a very good team, one that’s in form and having seen the Reynolds Plantation, and the course which is very British like and similar to Loch Lomond or Sunningdale, we have nothing to fear.”
The Alliss family have close ties with the Llandudno Trophy which resided on the family mantelpiece during the Second World War. Alliss’s grandfather Percy had inherited it as captain of England who won the Home International Tournament in 1939.
Peter Alliss later donated the trophy to the PGA where it was used following the inception of the PGA Cup in 1973.
The voice of golf will be cheering his son on but and but for a diary clash would have been out in America with him.
“When I first told him I was captain, dad said ‘I’m coming too, you don’t need a vice captain do you?’ said Alliss junior.
“But unfortunately the match clashes with the Quinn Direct British Masters so dad’s commentating on that but he’ll be on the phone keeping track with how we do.”
