Tom Dunn, pro at Wimbledon, cut the original holes here and Felixstowe’s rather grand birth was complete when Willie Fernie – a leading player of the day and Open champion three years later – was appointed greenkeeper/pro in 1880. The fifth oldest course in England doesn’t have much in the way of dunes so less of a linksy feel as a result.
