Carnoustie splits the panel: some feel it is too exacting to be enjoyable while others argued vehemently for its stringent test and all-round appeal. The feeling that its severity – especially the Barry Burn-dominated final trio – was too penal for the masses kept it out of the top five, but it should not put you off taking it on.
