The criticism of the Old Course – and some on the panel are of this mind – is that if you take the history away you have a fairly routine course. Others with input say that suggestion rather misses the point; you cannot take away the history – it is inherent in the turf and the minds of those hitting from it. No-one plays here without a sense of occasion and history.
