Built in 1995 but now a totally different animal following a comprehensive overhaul by architect Tom Mackenzie in association with director of golf David Thomson. Previously enjoyed only by members of the Carnegie Club, there are now limited tee times available. It is worth enquiring, for this generally links-like experience is one to savour; to suggest a further rise of as many as 10 places in the future might seem bold… until you’ve seen it for yourself.
Why I love… Skibo Castle
BY 1999 OPEN CHAMPION PAUL LAWRIE
“The course at Skibo Castle has changed completely. I played in the first Pro-Am back in about 1993 or 1994 and it was nothing like it is now. David Thomson, who I have known for many years back in Aberdeen, and Tom Mackenzie have done a hell of a job. It’s not a classic links but it plays and looks like one in many regards. That suits me down to the ground – the more links I play the better! It’s my favourite form of golf.”
