The Eden was opened in 1914, the fourth course to be built in St Andrews as a reflection of the growing demand for play on the Old, New and Jubilee. Heathland specialist Harry Colt was commissioned to design it and created severe bunkering, undulating greens and many long carries off the tee. Donald Steel made beneficial alterations in 1989.
