11 – Porthmadog

Porthmadog, Gwynedd. Green fees: £37 weekdays, £42 weekends. Tel: 01766 512037.

Brilliant hybrid course with the front nine a nice heathland-parkland combination and the back nine routed among the dunes. It is seriously first-class fare after the turn, especially from 10 to 12, and it would be a worthy top-10 course.

12 – Pwllheli

Pwllheli, Gwynedd. Green fees: £34 weekdays, £37 weekends. Tel: 01758 701644.

Like Porthmadog at No.11 (and there is nothing to choose between them) this is an excellent course of two halves. The linksy holes here are utterly charming and if there was a few more of them, it would be a top-10 contender.

13 – Nefyn

Pwllheli, Gwynedd. Green fees: Mon-Thu £46, Fri-Sun £54. Tel: 01758 720966.

You’ve seen the pictures and the television clips and if you think it looks thrilling and scenic, you are correct. So, you may be wondering why this clifftop course is not in the Top 10? Well, even those not especially sniffy about course design will find it a little bewildering at times, as a result of the spectacular but limiting land on which it is built. That said, it’s a ‘must visit’.

14 – North Wales

Llandudno, Gwynedd. Green fees: From £32 weekdays, up to £44 weekends. Tel: 01492 875325.

Some on the panel love this links’ really quirky holes and others finding it underwhelming at other moments. Nevertheless, well worth the trip to Llandudno as you play Conwy on your way to Pwllheli and Porthmadog.

15 – Borth & Ynyslas

Aer-Y-Mor, Ceredigion. Green fees: £40 all week (£50 a day). Tel: 01970 871202.

Straightforward and unpretentious, it feels like the little Scottish links you used to find in seaside towns in which you holidayed as a child. Don’t expect anything especially spectacular, just honest seaside fare.
