Abbey Hotel Golf & Country Club

What we say

On turning up at Abbey Hotel Golf & Country Club you’ll probably be praying in a bid to hang on to your balls so to speak. It’s a case of water, water everywhere – there’s more water features on this 22-years-old parkland layout than you’ll see in your local garden centre! So just ensure you’ve got plenty of ammo, specially for the par 3s –  you’re asked to hit over the dreaded drink every time – and the par 3 11th, where you’re hitting over a stream and pond to a green flanked by more aqua, in particular. Hopefully you won’t get into  the Abbey habit of losing your balls. When we visited, the golf course wasn’t at its best: it had taken one helluva beating from persistent rain, resulting in soggy, lumpy greens. Sept 30, 2006

Abbey Hotel Golf & Country Club's golf course is now over 22 years old and has magnificent trees and lakes, some of which formed part of the original Abbey landscape in the 19th century. It was designed by leading architect Donald Steel,

  • 3.5 out of 5 Great place for society days

    By abbenick

Don't let the first tee fool you on this course. Myself and 9 others played and stayed at this place for 3 nights and 4 great rounds of golf. After the first hole we were a bit worried about the course but it just gets better as you go on and the par threes are all quality holes. The 17th and 18th are perfect closing holes and the 18h will leave you wit that shall i go for it feeling. The 4 rounds here were very good but on the last day got stuck behind a group of members that refused to let anyone play through resulting in a 5 1/2 round which is unacceptable. The hotel and facilities were very good the food was great and apart from 1 member of staff the rest were very friendly. Overall a great place for a golf break

  • 4 out of 5 Great for Society Golf days.

We played at the Abbey on four consecutive days in May 2008 and the course just got better as each day went by. We stayed in the hotel for three nights and had a fantastic time. There were 40 men playing and each and every one of us would highly recommend this location for any society or individual golfer. The 19th over looks the 18th and it’s a great finishing hole when your last out and have 36 of your mates encouraging you to miss the putt. Staff and facilities were excellent.

  • 3.5 out of 5 Excellent greens

The greens were in excellent condition, one of the best i have played on for a while, grass a little long on the tees, much more challenging having not played here in last 7 years. Still have drainage issues. fantastic facilities

  • 3.5 out of 5 Great location for a golfing break !

    By NKaye2000

I played this course on a weekend golf break with some mates and it had been raining non-stop for days. Nice. Play was suspended for an hour or so due to a couple of water-logged greens, but we managed to get out. Obviously very soft and the greens were surprisingly quick ! Not too many bunkers protecting the greens but I managed to find plenty fairway ones ! Condition very good considering atrocious recent weather. Quite a challenging course, pretty narrow with water on 8 holes. The front 9 is quite short - 3000 yards off the yellows, with the back 9 being 3400, with plenty of par 4 holes. Despite this, every hole was very different - I liked it ! Due to the rain, we didn't use the driving range/putting green but the pro shop was well-stocked and 'Tawny' bar above the shop was very pleasant. Decent food & drink and a terrace area overlooking overlooking the 18th green. £115 for a 2 rounds of golf, dinner, bed & breakfast ? Can't go wrong !

  • 4 out of 5 FANTASTIC ALL ROUND GOLF W/END

    By Steve Hamblin

16 lads from our society went back here for our 3rd visit and annual lads weekend. Stayed 3 nights (4 rounds) and despite shocking rain it didn't dampen our fun. Course is challenging, interesting and many diff styles of holes. Get a buggy as its quite a travel (even thru the housing estate) this only adds character and in a buggy who doesn't have fun!!?? Excellent swimming pool & jacuzzi for resting muscles post round and clearing hangovers pre round. All you can eat breakfasts and excellent food at night all chucked in for about £200 p/p.... Staff were helpful and up for a laugh, rooms were top notch. Best golf weekend we've had. Good nightlife a short taxi away and bar serves you as long you stay awake. Go here, a course not to be missed.

  • 2.5 out of 5 The worst greens i have ever seen!

    By kevyb

Great looking course with very good facilities totally let down by the worst greens i have ever played. Spiked, sanded and very uneven made putting a lottery. Six of us all varying handicaps played and couldnt believe the state of them. When you look at the quality of the hotel and the clubhouse etc you cant imagine the shock and disappointment on our faces. A real shame.

  • 3 out of 5 Bit of a test

    By Anonymous

Level Parkland course - The back 9 is a bit of an endurance test for less experienced golfers because of the distances. Much improved in terms of drainage and maintenance over the last few years - now quite mature. Pleasant welcome and usually pretty easy to get a tee-off mid-week.
