Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa – Premier

What we say

Portal Golf & Country Club makes you feel like scoring well from the moment you drive through the impressive gated entrance to coming off the last green and supping a pint in the snug, circular clubhouse. Every hole on this challenging and picturesque golf course will have you begging for more.

Portal Golf & Country Club opened in 1990 and its championship golf course is now established as one of the finest inland layouts in the north west. The Donald Steel-designed golf course and its two sister golf courses- the Premier (18 hole) and the nine-hole Arderne - plus the unique clubhouse and the largest indoor golfing academy in the UK, combine to make Portal a real golfers’ paradise.

I loved my round here, but it really isn't a patch on the Championship course, some easy holes mean that decent scores can be achieved from an average performance. Not enough challenge, but beautiful surroundings.

8 of us have just come back from a visit to the Portal golf venue and i had to write a review on the quality of the Premier course, 2 negatives which are only minor but i feel i had to mention them: the 1st hole lacks character and can easily be driven by big hitters and the 12th-13th hole is something i have never witnessed in 15 years of playing, this being that after you have played the 12th you have to walk 300 yards back down the side of the 12th fairway to the 13th tee which is located virtually in the same position as the 12th tee (this could be interesting if the course is busy as potentially you are in the line of fire from both the group in front of you and the group behind) however this was not the case for us as the course was quiet, just a strange experience worth mentioning! That said overall the Premier course was quite simply a pleasure to play with every hole offering something different from the last hole, views of the countryside are 2nd to none, signature holes like 4 and 15 are along some of the best i have played, considering the weather we had the night before i expected the course to be waterlogged and the greens to be saturated but this was far from the case, the greens and tees were in fantastic condition. I would have to say 15-18 are possibly the best closing 4 holes i have played to date and the 18th bowl shaped green is a great way to finish.  If you are undecided which of the 2 courses to play i strongly recommend the Premier over the Championship, even to the point i would prefer to play the Premier twice if we were to return for a break.
