Bigbury Golf Club

What we say

Bigbury provides a challenging course with stunning views of the scenic South Devon coastline. How hard the par-70 6,000-yards course plays, depends on how hard the wind blows. But its coastal location means it is almost always playable and in fine condition. It also has a self-catering holiday cottage overlooking the course which comes with unlimited golf. Great holiday golf.

Bigbury has been providing a challenge for golfers for 85 years. The fairways are wide and the greens fast, but club selection is complicated by sea winds and awkwardly placed trees and bunkers. There's a stiff challenge of golf here if you can tear your eyes away from the views in all directions. Dartmoor lies to the north, Burgh Island to the west and on the eastern flank, Bantham Beach and the winding River Avon.

  • 4 out of 5 Beautiful, scenic clifftop course

    By Michael Smith

I have played Bigbury Golf Club a great many times as a holiday visitor. I have seen this cliff top course, overlooking the sea, gradually improve and mature over time. It is now not only interesting, but very scenic, decently challenging, and has been thoughtfully improved - with many often quite small, but usually wise, intelligent, changes to the layout and design. It is also maintained to a good standard. The greens, especially in the summer months, can be pretty quick. The surfaces are smooth and true and,for the most part, undulating and require careful lining up. The fairways are well cared for. The views are panoramic – inland towards the hills of Dartmoor, or along the Avon river estuary to Aveton Gifford; or out to sea, the rolling surf and the magnificent sight of Burgh Island and the tiny fishing port of Hope Cove. Wherever you look, in fact, delightful vistas abound. The clubhouse always offers the visitor a genuinely warm welcome, a good bar and simple but appealing, and well prepared, food. The welcome is also evident in the pro shop, which is well stocked with a wide variety of clubs, clothing and accessories. The green fees are fair and reasonable and offer excellent value, especially when the charm and quality of the course are taken into account. Although it is a course that is well protected by sea breezes, good bunkering and numerous bushy trees, it is also a fair test of golf – so that it can be played and enjoyed by high and low handicappers alike. I would suggest that it has something for everyone – and, if you have happen to suffer one of those poorer golfing days which afflict us all, then you still have the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful walk in delightful surroundings. If you are in, or anywhere near, the “South Hams” of Devon, why not give it a try? If necessary, take a little detour and try it out. I suspect that, like me, you will enjoy it.

  • 4 out of 5 Stunning Views

    By Paul Gale

Devon is a beautiful county - this is reflected in its many golf courses. This course boasts stunning sea views as well as beautiful country & estuary views. If you can keep your mind on the golf, the course will present a decent test for low & high handicappers alike. As a bonus, you will be given a friendly & warm welcome in the Club House serving above average golf club grub. Well worth a visit.

  • 5 out of 5 Great golf

I played on the course last week, and considering the dreadful weather we have had the course was in amazing shape. The greens are superb and the views of the coast were the best from any course around there. The staff were extremely friendly.

Played on a windy day and the going was a bit tough but the views were spectacular in places.  Loved it!
