What we say
Ayrshire is an area blessed with truly fantastic golf courses, and Dundonald Links deserves its place among the best of them.
Originally known as ‘Southern Gailes’ – reflecting its close proximity to the other Gailes courses in Ayrshire – the Dundonald Links we know today was built in late 2003 and designed by Kyle Phillips.
Golf World played here during the week of the 2004 Open at Troon in fact, as the course was poised to fully open and with a temporary clubhouse being assembled.
It is remarkable that it wasn’t until 16 later that work began on a clubhouse to match the course. And remember this is no ordinary club, it is the sister course to Loch Lomond.
When ranking courses we view the clubhouse as usually essentially irrelevant to the experience, and thus we rate Dundonald highly. It may lack the views of others on this coast line but it lacks for nothing in class.
RELATED: Royal Troon (Old Course) review
If you like the examination and ‘look’ of a modern links course, you will love it here. The fairways are often generous but burns eat into the eyeline and the mind while the bunkering is sharp and astute.
The greens are slick but true, and are surrounded by slopes that delight in escorting the slightly-errant approach off the a resting place on grass so tightly mown that the putter is a wise choice for all but the most sure-handed.
A good ball-striker and putter’s delight, Dundonald – which hosted a successful Scottish Open – belongs in the higher echelons of star-studded Ayrshire’s elite.

A challenge for all abilities wither you play off the white or hte championship tees. Not many straight puts and the greens are in great condition all year round. I have played this course summer and winter and it has been in superb condition. Cant recomend it highly enough.
A CRACKING LINKS COURSE ON THE WEST COURSE. VERY TESTING AND IF YOU SWITCH OFF, YOU WILL BE PUNISHED. STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND WELCOMING, THEY COULDNT DO ENOUGH FOR ME DURING MY VISIT. COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE AND GREENS RUNNING WELL DESPITE BEING IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER. THIS COURSE IS ONLY 5-6 YEARS OLD, AND WILL DEFINATELY GET BETTER WITH AGE. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. YOU MUST PLAY THIS COURSE WHILST VISITING AYRSHIRE.
