What we say

Southerndown Golf Club sits among the upper echelons of our Golf World Top 100 Courses Under £60 ranking.

The course enjoys a lofty location and edges into downland rather than pure links golf.

There is still a plentiful supply of gorse and springy turf on this course perched high up in the hills near Bridgend and it is no less enjoyable for the lack of pure seaside conditions.

Its nature is certainly not at the forefront of your mind as you are stand over the opening shot of the day, which is quite simply one of the toughest starts in British golf.

The uphill 1st is an uber-unforgiving opener and when there’s a strong wind – either into or across in either direction – you’d settle for a bogey there and then. Make a five, and as you walk off the green, you realise that actually you’d have been happy enough with a double.

It’s not all quite so exacting but the wind is frequently a factor and so is the gorse, which is just about the only thing the grazing sheep don’t seem that keen to nibble on. Their ‘work’ does help keep the fairways nice and tight; good ball strikers relish it here.
