How do we test golf bags?

How do we test golf bags?

The Today’s Golfer team have tested hundreds of bags over the years and are split evenly between those who prefer to carry and those who prefer to cart their clubs around the course, meaning we always have someone well placed to test the latest releases.

Top of our priorities when reviewing golf bags is practicality: is the bag fit for purpose, and does it make life easier on the course? Do clubs slide in and out easily, or do they tend to get tangled and stuck? Is there plenty of storage?

For carry bags, do the legs pop out seamlessly when you place the bag on the ground and then pop back in without catching when you pick it up again? Is the bag sturdy when standing on a slope or in strong winds? Is it comfortable to carry? For cart bags, we’re looking at the base of the bag and how well it will mount on a golf trolley.

Once we’ve loaded up a new arrival with our full artillery of clubs and accessories, we take the bag out for a spin. No one wants unnecessary weight, and with the best bags constructed from lightweight, high-tech and durable fabrics, there really is no excuse for a bag that feels overly cumbersome – even if you’re just mounting it to a set of wheels. With rain clouds never far away (in the UK at least), we feel waterproofing is an essential consideration too. A good bag in our books will repel water as a minimum, and if the material can’t protect your valuables and spare clothing, then it’s hard to justify scoring highly.

We’re big fans of functional storage space. Who likes stabbing themselves in a haystack of tees when trying to find a pitch repair tool, or fumbling around for your car keys among the debris of damp waterproofs and empty Coke bottles? It’s not the number of pockets, but the mixture of sizes and accessibility that counts, ensuring you do not have to merge accessories randomly. When it comes to carry bags, we scrutinise carry comfort, considering how well-balanced the bag feels across our shoulders and any concerns we have from an injury prevention perspective.

Finally, a quality golf bag is something you shouldn’t have to replace for a good number of years, and therefore, its robustness and durability are a non-negotiable for us. And while we may not be self-professed culture vultures, we’ve seen enough sights on the golf course to know what you can get away with, and are happy to say when we’re unsure on aesthetics!

Although many golfers have switched to a cart bag, lots of golfers still carry their clubs around the course. If that is you, then here is a complete guide to the best golf stand bags available in 2025.

Best Golf Stand Bags – Jump to:

Finding the best golf bag for you could make a huge difference to your game and how you play on the course. If you’re the type of golfer who doesn’t like being in a buggy or pushing a cart, then maybe a stand bag will be right up your street.

Having a stand bag gives you much more freedom to get around on and off the course; in the car park, you can get the clubs straight out of the car and walk to the first tee, while during the round you can walk straight to your ball wherever it’s sitting, without having to worry about areas where trolleys can’t go.

When looking for your new stand bag, you want to make sure it’s lightweight, comfortable, and sits well on your back, which is important when you’re on the course for hours at a time. A divider that keeps clubs well organised and protected is always something to consider. You’ll need a stand bag that is rigid, strong, and will stand up to the elements, so maybe finding a waterproof bag is a good idea if you find yourself caught out in the rain often.

If you find yourself thinking maybe a stand bag isn’t for you, then check out our guide to the best golf cart bags instead.

There are a few key things to consider when buying a golf bag, and the good news is there’s something out there to suit every type of golfer and every budget. Whether you’re after a simple stand bag to get the job done or a premium waterproof cart bag loaded with features, it all comes down to how you play the game and what matters most: comfort, storage, weight, or weather protection.

The first big decision is choosing between a stand and a cart bag. If you like walking the course, a stand bag will be your best friend. Look for something lightweight, comfortable to carry, and strong enough to handle being put down and picked up across 18 holes. Cart bags, on the other hand, are designed for golfers using trolleys or buggies. They’re bulkier but offer loads of storage and organisation, so finding one that’s easy to lift and manage can really help.

You’ll also want to consider how much storage you need, whether waterproofing is a priority, and how the bag looks. A lightweight bag is great for reducing fatigue on the course, and waterproofing can be a game-changer in wet climates. And finally, design is more important than you might think. Whether you prefer something bold and bright or sleek and subtle, there’s a bag out there that fits your style as well as your game.

This guide covers all of these key points and more, highlighting the best golf bags on the market right now. Every bag featured here offers a combination of these must-have features, helping you find the perfect option for your needs.

Best Golf Stand Bags

Best golf stand bag

The Hoofer Stand Bag has long had a stellar reputation, and after spending a good amount of time using the latest version, I can see exactly why it’s so popular. It’s one of those rare bags that just seems to get everything right. At 5.5 lbs (2.5kg), it’s not the lightest on the market, but it carries like a dream thanks to the SensorCool shoulder straps and redesigned back puck system, which makes switching to a single strap feel effortless. The comfort is excellent, even when fully loaded.

What I’ve loved most about the Hoofer is the organisation. With 16 pockets and a whopping 22 litres of storage, there’s genuinely a place for everything. I particularly appreciated the magnetic rangefinder pocket, large gusseted ball pocket, and full-length apparel space perfect for spare layers, snacks, and wet-weather gear. The rain hood storage in the back pad is clever, adding padding while keeping it tucked neatly away. The bag isn’t waterproof, but in light rain, I didn’t have any real issues.

The 5-way top is spacious and well-designed, and the new club-guiding base really does help keep clubs organised and tangle-free. It’s also solid when strapped onto a trolley, thanks to the cart strap channel, and the leg guards are a smart touch to reduce wear.

Overall, the Hoofer is a brilliant all-rounder, practical, well-built, and super comfortable. If you’re looking for a feature-packed carry bag that still feels refined and easy to use, this one’s hard to beat.

Pros

  • Sturdy
  • Easy to carry
  • Plenty of storage

Cons

  • Not waterproof

One of the lightest golf bags available

Expert rating:

The Wilson Exo Lite Stand Bag is one of the best lightweight golf bags I’ve used, and after carrying it for more than 100 rounds, I can confidently say it punches well above its weight. At just 1.8kg (4 lbs), it’s incredibly easy to carry. Even with a full set of clubs, balls, drinks, and a few extras, it never feels like a burden. The dual strap is comfortable and well-padded, and on short walks between holes, I’ll often throw it over one shoulder without a second thought.

Storage is minimal but well thought out, with six pockets, including a full-length apparel pocket, a waterproof valuables pouch, and a magnetic rangefinder pocket. I’ve repurposed a couple of these based on what works best. My rangefinder lives in the drinks sleeve, for example. The 4-way top divider is excellent, with no snagging or crowding of clubs. The stand system is generally reliable, though it doesn’t always kick out cleanly when an umbrella is in place.

It’s not the most feature-packed or durable bag out there, the zips feel a bit delicate when overloaded, and it’s only showerproof, but it looks smart and holds up well to regular use. The red and white model I’ve been using still looks great with just light marking. If you’re after a simple, comfortable, and genuinely lightweight carry bag that gets the basics spot on, the Exo Lite is hard to beat.

A bag that will certainly not disappoint

Expert rating:

4.5
The OGIO Fuse Stand Bag immediately impressed me from the moment it arrived. The Graffiti Kaleidoscope colourway looks fantastic in person, bright, bold, and unique without being over the top. It’s the kind of bag that turns heads at the course, and I had several people ask about it before I even teed off.

At just 4.8 lbs (2.1kg), it’s ideal for walking rounds, and the Fit Disk strap system does a great job evenly distributing weight. The straps are a bit chunky and took me a few rounds to get fully used to, but once adjusted, they sat comfortably on my shoulders.

I found the storage to be excellent. The Rapid Access pockets and Profile three-ball silo made grabbing things mid-round really easy, and there’s a surprising amount of space for a lightweight bag. I especially liked the side pocket, which comfortably held my waterproof and snacks. That said, the lack of a waterproof valuables pocket was frustrating I got caught in a quick shower and my phone and wallet got damp. Also, the over-moulded top feels solid but might cause long-term shaft wear.

Overall, this is a smart, fun, and practical carry bag. It’s well worth considering if you want something different that performs reliably on the course.

A solid bag which makes walking the course a breeze

A sleek, good-quality golf bag that will last is what most golfers want, and the TaylorMade FlexTech Stand Bag fits that category perfectly. I’ve been impressed with how lightweight and well-balanced it feels. At just 4.85 lbs (2.2kg), it’s easy to carry around the course, and the 4-point double strap system sits comfortably without needing constant adjustment.

One thing I really like is the versatility. It works just as well on a trolley or buggy as it does on your back, thanks to the cart strap passthrough, which keeps the bag secure without restricting access to the pockets. The FlexTech stand system is smooth and stable, and the 7.5" 4-way divider helps organise clubs well, though I wouldn’t mind an extra divider or two to reduce grip tangling even further.

The seven pockets offer enough storage without going overboard. I found the waterproof valuables pocket genuinely useful, and the rest of the storage is well-sized for everything you need: balls, snacks, waterproofs, rangefinder, and more. The 600D poly shell feels solid and has handled light rain with no issues.

Overall, the FlexTech is a great fit for golfers who want something lightweight, reliable, and adaptable. It doesn’t overcomplicate things, and that’s exactly why I rate it so highly.

Pros

  • Easily carries 14 clubs
  • Plenty of pocket space on a stand bag
  • Subtle design

Cons

  • Straps take some adjusting

High-quality, lightweight performance

The Ultralight Pro Stand Bag really impressed me from the start. I was drawn in by the sleek look and standout Winter Snake Camo design, even if I was using it in summer! It looks practical and lightweight, and it certainly turned heads at the course. Coming from a Ping Hoofer, this bag feels similarly functional but packs a punch with more visual flair and a smarter layout. At under 5 lbs, it’s surprisingly easy to carry, and the comfortable, adjustable strap system makes walking 18 holes feel effortless.

The 4-way top divider is well-padded and fits a full set of clubs, but I did notice a bit of snagging where grips meet at the base, especially with no separate putter well. Still, there’s plenty of storage: seven well-placed pockets, including a magnetic rangefinder pocket, a lined valuables pouch, a large apparel pocket, and a cooler-lined bottle sleeve. Everything was easy to reach, even on my Motocaddy Cube trolley.

With a sturdy Flex-Base stand, smooth zippers, and thoughtful touches like a Velcro glove patch and towel clip, this is a practical, good-looking carry bag. If you want a lightweight option that’s easy to carry, durable, and stylish without overcomplicating things, this bag is spot-on.

Pros

  • Straps are easy to adjust and super comfortable
  • Stable base
  • Plenty of room for 14 clubs

Cons

  • Drinks pocket is could be better

A luxury bag which has cut no corners

The Daytona Plus Stand Bag oozes luxury and style, and after using it across multiple rounds, it’s clear this bag is built to impress. From the quilted PU panels to the velour lining and grosgrain detailing, it feels like a premium product the moment you pick it up. At 5.75 lbs (2.6kg), it’s not the lightest stand bag out there, but the materials and finish more than justify the weight. I received more comments on this bag’s look than any other I’ve carried. It's a real head-turner.

What impressed me most was how well thought out the design is. The 4-way velour-lined divider keeps clubs protected and separated, and I found no rubbing or grip damage even after several weeks of use. The rotator stand system offers rock-solid stability, and the convertible strap system makes it easy to switch between single and double-strap carry, depending on the round. The neoprene back panel adds surprising comfort, even on longer walks.

Storage is generous but not excessive, six pockets cover all bases, with standout features like a magnetic rangefinder pocket and a cooler-lined sleeve for drinks. For golfers who appreciate standout design and functional luxury, the Daytona Plus offers both style and performance in a seriously impressive package.

Pros

  • Quality materials
  • Fun design
  • Lightweight and comfortable

Cons

  • Could have better storage space

Built for the golfer who wants to stand out in a subtle way

I’ve used the OGIO Shadow Stand Bag for the past few months, and it’s completely won me over. At 5.6 lbs (2.55kg), it’s not the lightest stand bag available, but it makes up for that with premium quality and thoughtful design. From the synthetic leather finish to the carbon fibre legs and smooth zips, every inch of this bag screams luxury. It’s stylish, smart, and built to last, with subtle branding and four classy colourways that turn heads without shouting.

In terms of storage and usability, OGIO has nailed it. The nine pockets are well laid out and offer a mix of zips, magnetic closures, and elastic mesh sleeves. I particularly love the Rapid Access pocket, and the 4-way top divider is well-padded and keeps clubs separated with ease. Carrying is surprisingly comfortable thanks to the Fit Disc strap system, which balances the load well, although it can occasionally rub depending on what you're wearing or carrying. well-padded

Overall, the Shadow is one of the most complete premium stand bags I’ve tested. It looks incredible, performs across all conditions, and offers the functionality needed for serious golfers. If you’re happy to invest in a high-end bag, the OGIO Shadow is absolutely worth the money.

Built to withstand the most torrential conditions

Price: $358.77
I’ve used the Sun Mountain H2NO 14-Way Stand Bag through winter golf, and it’s completely won me over. Built by one of the most trusted brands in the game, this bag offers an ideal mix of style, functionality, and all-weather protection. The modern design is sleek, the materials feel premium, and the subtle branding adds a clean, high-end look. Even after months of rain, wind, and mud, the bag still looks almost new proof of its durability.

The waterproof performance is excellent, aided by sealed YKK zippers and welded seams. The 14-way top makes club organisation easy, and while it lacks a dedicated putter well, the layout is still efficient and intuitive. I love how lightweight it is (2.6kg), making it easy to carry even with extra layers or waterproofs in tow. The E-Z Fit dual strap system is well-padded and adjustable, offering a really comfortable carry. I did notice the straps caused some light fraying on one hoodie, but it’s a minor trade-off.

Storage is smart and practical, with seven well-placed pockets, including an insulated beverage pouch and a magnetic cooler pocket. For golfers who carry in all conditions, this is one of the best waterproof stand bags available.

The king of luxury

The Carbon LUX is arguably Vessel's most luxurious and versatile stand bag that oozes class everywhere you look. The detailing and the quality of this bag is unreal. If you're not bothered by price when it comes to your golf bag, then this has to be a contender.

The Carbon Fibre spine, I thought, worked wonders at improving the toughness of this bag without compromising any weight. I love how easy this bag is to carry, the straps are super comfortable, and I'm a huge fan of how well-balanced the straps are, which makes walking the course a breeze. The Carbon LUX is the perfect choice for walking golfers seeking an elevated, lightweight carry. The tour-grade materials, leather accents and metal zippers give the premium look and feel golfers will be after for a bag of this calibre.

Although it's not the biggest bag, I didn't struggle for storage space. The Carbon Lux features 9 external pockets, including 3 quick-access magnetic pockets for added convenience on the course. I've not even begun to speak about the base! The stability and balance you get with the Rotator Base and carbon legs is hard to beat.

Where style meets functionality

If you take as much pride in your golf bag as you do in your driver or putter, the Stitch SL2 could be your perfect match. With sleek lines, premium detailing, and surprising practicality, this bag delivers the complete package for golfers who want their gear to stand out.

At a glance, you’d swear it’s made from leather, but Stitch’s proprietary Touring Fabric is the real star. It mimics leather in look and feel, but it’s more lightweight, durable, and water-resistant, a major upgrade when it comes to performance on the course. I loved having that premium appearance without the usual maintenance concerns.

The versatile strap system lets you switch between single and double carry options, depending on your round. Great for squeezing in a few holes or going the distance. Despite weighing just 5.5 lbs, the SL2 offers 50% more storage than the original model, including a new Saddle Pocket with stretch fabric, a magnetic ball pocket that holds a dozen balls, and felt-lined valuables storage.

The 4-way top provides ample room for a full set of clubs, and the new lift-assist handles make handling and loading a breeze.

Whether you’re walking 9 or grinding through 18, the SL2 makes every round feel smoother. It’s a lightweight bag that brings luxury, comfort, and functionality together in one standout design, and yes, the name Superleggera feels totally appropriate.

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Comfortable straps and hip pad
  • Can be used as a single or double-strap

If you’re the kind of golfer who wants just one bag to cover every scenario from quick range sessions and walking 9 holes to full rounds with a buggy, this is the bag for you. The Sunday Ryder blends lightweight performance, smart design, and day-to-day practicality in a way that makes it an easy recommendation for almost every golfer.

At just 2.2kg, it’s super easy to carry, but don’t let the weight fool you; this bag is seriously durable. The zippers are top quality, the stand system is solid and reliable, and every pocket feels like it’s been put there for a reason. I particularly love the side open pocket, perfect for stashing a towel or brush without them rattling around in the car.

The 5-way full-length divider comfortably fits a full set, keeping your clubs organised without feeling cramped. It has all the storage you need: a large apparel pocket, front-facing accessory and snack pockets, and even a four-can insulated Frosty Pocket for drinks. The velcro glove holder and cart strap pass-through are two of my favourite features, small details that make a big difference.
Clean, good-looking, and genuinely functional, the Sunday Ryder is a bag that just makes golf feel easier and more fun.

Pros

  • Versatile - great for walking
  • Good storage and clever pocket layout
  • Removable straps for buggy use
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Clubs can get stuck due to limited dividers
If you’re a dedicated carry golfer who wants the lightest possible setup without sacrificing function or stability, the Callaway HyperLite Zero is a brilliant option. Weighing just 1.35kg, it’s incredibly easy to carry, and thanks to the ANAMATIC double strap system and soft mesh hip pad, it sits comfortably and evenly on your shoulders throughout the round.

Despite its ultra-lightweight build, this bag is impressively sturdy. The FLEX POD base and non-slip foot pads ensure the stand stays planted, and it handled all sorts of terrain during my testing without ever feeling flimsy. The zips are a highlight, genuinely some of the best I’ve used on a carry bag. Smooth, strong, and built to last.

Storage is excellent for such a compact design. You get nine well-placed pockets, including a full-length apparel compartment, a valuables pocket, and ball/accessory pockets. I did notice the grey colourway can pick up a bit of dirt, but it's easy to wipe clean and looks sharp when fresh.

Club organisation is solid thanks to the 4-way top with two full-length dividers, although space is naturally more limited than in larger bags. Still, everything has its place, and the integrated grab handle makes it easy to move around.

For golfers who walk regularly and value simplicity, comfort, and low weight above all else, the HyperLite Zero delivers in a big way. It's one of the best ultralight bags out there and it’s tougher than it looks.

Pros

  • Super lightweight makes it easy to carry
  • Sturdy leg stand and comfortable strap system
  • Well-designed pocket layout and durability

Cons

  • Lighter colourways pick up dirt
  • Not fully waterproof
If you're prioritising minimal weight and sleek design, the Titleist Players 4 Carbon is a strong contender. With carbon fibre legs, a ripstop exterior, and weighing in at just over 1.3kg, it’s one of the lightest stand bags on the market. I was impressed with how stable it stood on the ground, and the grab handles made it super easy to move in and out of the car or trolley.

While it’s clearly built for comfort and convenience, it does have a few limitations. I found the club space slightly tight, especially with 14 clubs in play. My putter grip isn’t oversized, but there was some rubbing and resistance getting clubs in and out, which became a bit frustrating over 18 holes. It’s not a deal-breaker, but definitely worth noting for players with thicker grips.

On the plus side, storage is surprisingly generous for such a compact bag. The pockets are well-placed and easy to access, including a deep valuables pocket and large side apparel compartments. I particularly liked the external glove and pencil holders, little features that make a big difference.

However, the bag isn’t the most water-resistant. Light rain got through the fabric quicker than I’d like, so if you’re often playing in unpredictable weather, you might want to opt for something more waterproof.

That said, for fair-weather golfers or those who love to walk the course, the Players 4 Carbon is near unbeatable in terms of comfort. It carries beautifully and feels effortless, even with a full set and extras on board. If weight is your top priority, this bag hits the mark.

Pros

  • Ultra-lightweight and stylish
  • Comfortable straps and quality dividers
  • Good storage for its size

Cons

  • Not very water-resistant
  • No magnetic pockets

I absolutely loved my old golf bag, the Wilson Exo Lite, so it was going to take something special to convince me to make a change. Enter the Mizuno BR-D3, and after months of use (including a fair share of UK winter golf), I can confidently say this one’s a winner.

At 2kg, it’s slightly heavier than my old setup, but it makes up for it with better durability, more thoughtful features, and a smarter layout. The 8 well-placed pockets, including a waterproof valuables pocket and a double-zip ball compartment, make organisation easy. Everything has its place: tees, markers, Sharpie, even my little alignment tool, and as someone who likes things tidy, that really matters.

The Camo & Copper colourway is the standout option for me. It looks sharp and premium, even though this is Mizuno’s most affordable stand bag.

The 4-way divider keeps clubs separate without tangling grips, and the stand system is solid, though a firm drop ensures full leg extension. The straps are super comfortable, and I had no trouble dialling in the fit.

It’s not waterproof, but for fair-weather players like me, that’s no deal-breaker. If Mizuno ever shaves 200g and adds waterproofing, it could be perfect, but as it stands, the BR-D3 is the best all-round carry bag I’ve used.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Very comfortable to wear
  • Great storage options
  • Good price

Cons

  • Not waterproof
  • Some colorways don't look as premium
Big Max has built a reputation for making reliable, well-crafted golf bags, and with the Dri-Lite Hybrid Prime Stand Bag, that legacy continues. I’ve always considered Big Max a consistent presence in the “best golf bag” conversations, so I was keen to see if their latest premium offering lived up to the name.

As the 2024 golf season wrapped up, I tested the Dri-Lite Hybrid Prime extensively, carrying it during warm summer rounds and mounting it on a trolley through damp, hilly winter golf. The bag handled every condition with ease. Its premium materials, full waterproof protection, and refined design made it a standout from day one.

At 2.7kg, it’s slightly heavier than a typical stand bag, but you’re getting extra durability, excellent club protection, and high-end craftsmanship in return. The 14-way full-length dividers keep your clubs secure and rattle-free, while the seven spacious pockets include everything from a velour-lined valuables pouch to a magnetic cooler pocket that quickly became a personal favourite.

It’s comfortable to carry, well-balanced on a trolley, and has held up impressively well over several months of use. My only gripe? The shoulder straps occasionally squeak, but that's hardly a deal-breaker.

For golfers who want the luxury feel of a leather bag with the practicality of a modern stand bag, the Big Max Dri-Lite Hybrid Prime delivers. It’s perfect for those who want one bag that does it all, with style.

  • Stylish Design
  • Ample Storage
  • Excellent Club Organization
  • Stable Stand

Cons

  • Slightly Heavier
  • Strap Squeaking
If you’re after a stand bag that blends performance, premium materials, and standout style, the Sun Mountain Matchplay delivers in spades. I’ve really enjoyed using this bag it looks and feels high-end, holds up well in all conditions, and is impressively comfortable over 18 holes.

The green colourway is a head-turner. It’s bold without being over-the-top and has earned more compliments than any bag I’ve carried. It’s also incredibly easy to keep clean, thanks to the duravinyl fabric, which holds up brilliantly in both dry and damp conditions.

With nine thoughtfully laid-out pockets, the Matchplay provides plenty of storage for everything from dual valuables pockets and a magnetic rangefinder slot to a full-length apparel compartment. The only thing missing for me is a larger insulated pocket for drinks. The dual hydration sleeves are nice, but more room for refreshments would be a bonus.

The 4-way top is classic and compact, offering smooth club access without bulk, while the dual strap system and comfort hip pad make carrying feel effortless. Stability is another strong point, with lightweight aluminium legs, a roller bottom leg mechanism, and an internal compression base that keeps the bag well-balanced on all terrain.

For walkers who want standout looks without sacrificing function, the Matchplay is a classy, practical option with real attention to detail.

Pros

  • Premium, stylish look with standout colour
  • Comfortable to carry with dual strap system
  • Well-placed storage including magnetic rangefinder pocket

Cons

  • Drinks pocket could be bigger

Golf Bags: Buying Guide

There are a range of key factors to consider when thinking about buying a golf bag, and we have delved into these below…

Budget

As with many golf products, price is usually at the forefront of every golfer’s mind. With golf bags, there is a style, a type, and a price for everyone. If you want a stand bag that is nice and cheap and will job, there is plenty out there for you. Or if you want something more premium, such as a waterproof cart bag, then there are plenty of them too.

Bag Type

It’s as simple as, Do I want a stand bag or a cart bag? If you can’t make your mind up, there are also hybrid stand bags that are good for both, but for now, let’s keep it simple. Both types of bags have positives and negatives depending on what you want out of them, so you should think about exactly what will best help your game.

A cart bag is for someone who uses either a golf buggy or a golf cart on the course. If you’re this golfer, then find a bag that has plenty of storage space and is good at keeping your clubs organised, as it will make your life much easier. Cart bags are much bigger and bulkier than stand bags, so finding one that is lightweight and easy to haul from your garage to the course will benefit you.

A stand bag is for a golfer who prefers to walk around the course carrying their golf clubs. If you’re a golfer who loves to carry, then factors such as weight and comfort will be most important as they’re going to be on your back for 18 holes. Even though the bags are smaller, finding one with good storage can help, as there is not much room in comparison to a cart bag. As you’re constantly taking the bag on and off, getting one that is nice and robust with strong legs and good support is key.

Weight

Most brands nowadays strive to make the lightest bag on the market, whether that be a stand or a cart bag, as making life easier is something most golfers want. A lightweight stand bag is great as it’s on your shoulders the whole round, and you don’t want it fatiguing you before the 18th hole. A cart bag isn’t required nor expected to be lightweight; however, the lighter it is, the easier it is going to be to shift from home, to the car, to the course.

Waterproofing

Having a waterproof golf bag may not be essential, but it’s certainly something to consider, and being prepared for the heavens to open is a no-brainer. If you live somewhere like I do in the UK, then you’ll know that it can be wet all year round and can also rain when you least expect it, so getting a waterproof bag to look after your clubs and valuables is great. For many of you who live in warmer, drier climates, this factor may be something you brush over and not worry about.

Storage

A bag with tonnes of pockets is great, you have loads of room for your apparel, balls, gloves, valuables, and accessories. On a stand bag, you may have to compromise some weight; the more pockets you have on your bag, as it will be heavier and you’re carrying around more stuff. But stand bags can be simple and keep things light with only a few pockets; it’s just a case of only packing the essentials for the course.

Cart bags, on the other hand, tend to have an abundance of storage spaces, with bags like the Mizuno BR-D4 having an amazing 20 different places to keep your things. As cart bags are bigger, they tend to have larger pockets, and as you’re not carrying them around the course, you can fill them with more stuff, whether that be a buffet for the 10th tee or a full set of waterproofs.

Looks

Whether you want a stand or a cart, there is a design out there for everybody. Brands have bags that are more garish to help you stand out on the course or something a little more subtle to help you blend in. Most bags, whether it be a cart or a stand, have similar designs, so it may be worth considering the style or colourway you want.

Stand bags: FAQs

  • What are the benefits of using a golf stand bag?

Golf stand bags are lightweight, compact, and versatile, offering easy portability for golfers who prefer to carry their bag. They take up less space in your car or home compared to cart bags, are ideal for quick rounds or practising, and are often waterproof for year-round use. Stand bags are more affordable than trolleys and cart bags, providing an economical option while also encouraging walking for better course engagement and fitness.

  • What to look for when buying a golf stand bag?

When choosing a stand bag, consider its weight, comfort, and strap padding for a pleasant carry. Ensure it has enough pockets for accessories and clothing, and decide on the number of dividers (14 for full organisation or fewer for a lighter bag). For year-round use, opt for a waterproof model with space for waterproof gear and an umbrella.

  • Can a golf stand bag be used on a Trolley?

Yes, most golf stand bags are designed to work with trolleys and carts. Many have elasticated straps and handles to securely fit on trolleys, making them versatile for both carrying and wheeling.

  • Can I fit a full set of clubs in a golf stand bag?

Most golf stand bags can fit a full set of clubs, though the number of dividers may limit organisation. Lighter models with fewer dividers may not accommodate a full set as neatly, but they still offer sufficient space.

  • Are golf stand bags waterproof?

Not all golf stand bags are waterproof, but many models are made with water-repellent materials or come with waterproof covers. If you play in wet conditions, look for bags specifically designed for water resistance.

  • What size golf stand bag should I buy?

Choose a bag that suits your needs based on the number of clubs you carry, your preferred style, and whether you plan to use it with a trolley. Smaller, lighter bags are ideal for quick rounds, while larger bags with more dividers are better for longer rounds with more equipment.
