What we say...

2009, Updated Model – Review

One of the louder drivers on test, but actually our lads seemed to quite enjoy the sound at impact – maybe because they all hit it so well. Chris labelled the L5V a cracking product for improvers, while Jon felt it gave a confidence boost at address. This is a good choice, especially as it is an adjustable driver – golfers can choose a more draw-biased setting if they so wish.

The Cobra L5V Driver has been engineered to produce drives that are longer and straighter than ever, the multi-material Cobra L5V driver not only possesses the largest and most forgiving club face in golf, it also features Cobra's new Adjustable Flight Technology. Not only that, but the Cobra L5V driver has two adjustable shaft settings to optimise your personal ball flight!

The new King Cobra L5V Driver uses a special hosel sleeve with two built-in face settings: Standard (0) and Increased Draw-Bias (1). Each driver is factory set in the Standard position. This allows golfers to straighten out their trajectory or have the option to encourage a draw when required. As yet, swappable shafts are not available but may become so in the future.

Last year’s Cobra L47 Driver was a well designed and extremely solid driver which also performed well in our driver test. However, the new king cobra L5V is a huge improvement in the looks department and early testing suggests it has even more available power. Visually, the club looks stunning and the enlarged face really inspires confidence behind the ball.

TG Equipment Editor Jon Greathead got to try the Cobra L5V before anybody else and has been raving about it ever since! He says "The L5V is one of the best-looking clubs I’ve seen this year. It looks like you can’t miss with it and although it’s right up to the 460cc limit it looks absolutely enormous! Within 25 minutes of hitting my first ball I had reduced my backspin dramatically and was hitting long, flat bombs instead of sky high efforts into outer space!”.

Cobra claim the L5V has the largest club face in golf which provides maximum COR across the face and results in am extremely high level of forgiveness. This is also helped by the “Dual Rhombus Face Insert”. The club also has a lightweight carbon composite crown and sole inserts to move the CG to a position lower and further back. This raises up theMOI (moment of intertia) to give the golfer plenty of forigeness on mishits in particular.

The Cobra L5V is available in three different shaft configurations which will help best optimise your ball speed depending on how fast you swing the club. The X Speed Shaft (for top layers) comes with the 8.5 degree clubhead; the F Speed Shaft for faster ball speed players comes with the 9.5 and 10.5 clubhead while the M Speed for moderate speed golfers comes with the 11.5 option.

Strengths – Great options with the adjustability, wide range of shafts available, nice looking. Weaknesses – Poor sound on impact, lacking distance. On first glance the Cobra L5V is a staggering product, which comes with a bold colour scheme and is obviously drenched with the latest of golfing technologies. The unique selling point of this particular offering from Cobra is the much coveted interchangeable shaft technology with two installation positions. This revolutionary feature allows the clubface to be set in a neutral position, at 0°, or in a draw bias – set at 2° closed. This knowing of the club fitting the idiosyncrasies of your golf swing should give a real confidence boost, however….. I have been utterly unimpressed by the driver. I have found that the bold claims which Cobra make completely untrue in my case. The sound at impact is meagre, it is not a powerful awe-inspiring crash, instead a weak splutter. Thus far I haven’t seen any increase in distance over my previous driver, a Cleveland XLS, so do not feel to be benefiting from the Dual Rhombus face inserts. In contrast the club does offer the largest face in any golf driver, which when coupled with the larger sweet-spots does increase the forgiveness of off-centre hits. Another integral factor is the wide range of shaft options which cobra offer as standard, this allows any type of golfer to be suited for the perfect shaft, which should produce better results. A final factor which I love about this club is the stylish head cover, it is magnetic, and unusually protects the shaft as well as head from damage.
