What we say...

The Spider GTX and GT Max bring increased stability, more color options, and new levels of adjustability to TaylorMade’s putter range.

Even though the TaylorMade Spider putter franchise has been among the best putters since Jason Day set the world alight with his red Spider Tour putter in 2015 (winning the PGA Championship and rising to world #1), 2022 somehow felt like a watershed moment for the company’s flat sticks.

The Spider GTX and GT Max build on TaylorMade’s success to become two of the best mallet putters available.

Rory McIlroy uses the TaylorMade Spider X Hydro Blast putter.

TaylorMade are perhaps best known for making great drivers, and Rory McIlroy is known for driving prodigious distances, but in 2022 Rory had his best-ever putting year, using a trusty TaylorMade Spider Hydro Blast putter. The Northern Irishman won three times in 2022, including the Tour Championship, as he returned to the top of the world rankings. We’ve examined all the clubs Rory McIlroy uses here.

Now, with TaylorMade Spider putters perhaps more highly favored than ever, TaylorMade have decided to build on that success with the launch of two new models: the Spider GTX and Spider GT Max.

The Spider GTX combines the best features of TaylorMade’s iconic Spider Tour and Spider X models while bringing a full array of color options.

The Spider GTX Max offers a new level of adjustability, with a sliding weight that can help you get the face more closed or open at impact, depending on whether you tend to miss putts right or left.

Increased forgiveness is a huge story in TaylorMade’s new Stealth 2 drivers, and thanks to shifting more mass outside the Spider GTX’s hollow aluminum frame, it’s a story that continues onto the dancefloor with their 2023 putters.

TaylorMade say a 154g steel backweight and wing structure creates a deeper center of gravity (38mm) for less face rotation, so golfers can expect an enhanced MOI (5330g cm2) stability performance. This concentration of mass at the rear of the club means the Spider GTX ranks among the most forgiving Spider putters of all time.

The model sees the return of a white True Path alignment aid which is great for framing the ball at address and clearly shows the path towards the hole.

The Spider GTX is also available for total customization in TaylorMade’s ‘MySpider’ program, with 13 top plate color options, 22 face insert color options and 14 paint fill options. You can also choose the type of hosel, sightline, with or without True Path Alignment, and even the shaft color rear weight color and badge color.

TaylorMade say that face angle is responsible for 90% of the result of any putt. If the face is open, you’ll miss it right. Face closed and you’ll miss left. That’s why the Spider GT Max is designed to help you overcome your tendencies and get the face pointing in the right direction more often.

The TaylorMade Spider GT Max putter is all about adjustability. It features two 40g sliding tungsten weights that can be easily positioned to influence center of gravity (CG), toe hang and face rotation. TaylorMade say this enables them to cover the CG ranges of nearly all preceding mallet-style Spider putters while helping to minimize mis-hit tendencies for specific putting strokes.

For players who tend to miss putts to the left, placing the weights in Position 1 (farthest back) slows down face rotation. Players who miss to the right will benefit from Position 3 (farthest forward) as this helps close the face faster. If you don’t have a consistent miss and are looking for versatility, Position 2 offers a neutral option. Think about drivers with adjustable weights to help minimize hook or slice ball flights which lead to left and right misses, but it’s now in your putter.

This adjustability enables the CG depth to be moved from 29-41mm, and the toe hang tweaked to 17°, 20° or 23°.

What TaylorMade say about the GT Max

“We encourage golfers to spend time observing their putting tendencies,” says Bill Price, TaylorMade’s Director of Production Creation in putters and wedges.

“By knowing where you often miss, you can set the weights on Spider GT Max to counteract your tendencies and help you hit putts on target with greater consistency. Why adjust your putting motion when you can adjust your putter?”
