What we say...
Here’s what more than 30 rounds of golf in the FootJoy Quantum golf shoe taught me.
I’ve tested a lot of the best golf shoes in my time, so it takes a lot to impress me. It takes even more for me to keep a pair of shoes on my feet beyond the several rounds I put them through their paces. So, the fact that I received the FootJoy Quantum almost a year ago and they’re still my go-to shoe should tell you almost all you need to know.
There’s a reason FootJoy are the No.1 shoe brand in golf, and they have produced the goods again with the brilliant Quantum. Designed for golfers who want premium comfort and modern looks without losing traditional performance.
After testing them across more than 30 rounds in all conditions, I can confidently say these are not only among the best spikeless golf shoes, but the best golf shoes. That doesn’t mean they’re perfect – in my 31 years of wearing golf shoes, I’m yet to find a pair that are – but the combination of comfort, looks, and playability make them an easy recommendation. Here’s why I’ve stuck with them for so many rounds.
Pros
- Out-of-the-box comfort with no break-in period
- Insole molds to the shape of your foot
- Sleek, athletic styling
- Easy to clean
- High level of waterproofing
Cons
- Less grip compared to some leading spikeless competitors, especially in wet conditions
- Upper material creases easily
Comfort: 5/5
Comfort is where the Quantum truly blew me away. From the very first time I put them on, they felt broken-in – no stiffness, no rubbing, no wishing I’d brought my older pair after nine holes. In fact, after walking 36 holes in a day, my feet felt almost the same as they had after the first tee shot. The Ortholite Impression FitBed is the secret weapon here. It molds to the shape of your foot over time, creating what feels like a custom fit. Add in an excellent lacing system that really locks your foot in place, and you’ve got the most comfortable golf shoe I’ve ever worn. Breathability is excellent, too. Even on the hottest days, my feet remained sweat-free.

Performance: 4/5
Performance-wise, the Quantum is strong but not perfect. The locked-in feel from the lacing system is fantastic, but the grip is not at the level of some of the other top spikeless shoes out there (think Payntr, Ecco, and Under Armour). On dry days, it holds up fine, but on particularly wet or uneven lies, my confidence in the shoe wasn’t as high. The waterproofing was impressive in light rain, but in heavy, prolonged downpours, moisture has made it through the material around the heel and ankle, leaving my sock wet. Even when something says it’s 100% waterproof, there’s usually a way for the wet stuff to get in. Despite that, day-to-day performance was excellent, hence reaching for them again and again.

Durability: 4.5/5
After more than 30 rounds, the Quantums have held up really well. Structurally, they’re still solid – there’s no sole separation, no significant wear to the cushioning (in fact, I think they’re still getting more comfortable), and no breakdown in support. The uppers do crease fairly easily across the toe, which makes keeping them looking brand-new a bit of a challenge, but not a huge surprise when the leather is so soft and supple. Thankfully, they’re very easy to clean, and a quick wipe-down after each round usually brings them up well. There’s a one-year waterproof warranty, which offers good peace of mind, but, as mentioned earlier, heavy downpours could see some moisture sneak through. With sizes ranging from 6 to 14 and both medium and wide fits available, FootJoy clearly wants every golfer to find their perfect fit.

Style and Design: 4.5/5
I really like the direction FootJoy took with the Quantum’s design. It’s a modern, athletic look – a smart blend of sneaker inspiration and traditional golf shoe structure. They look great with both trousers and shorts, but they’re unmistakably golf shoes, so you probably won’t want to wear them casually off-course. FootJoy’s branding is a little louder than I would prefer; a more subtle logo would have really taken the look up a notch. However, with a host of colour options to choose from, you’ll have no problem finding a pair that matches your personal style.
Tech and Features: 4.5/5
The Quantum is absolutely packed with clever tech designed to elevate comfort and performance. SofFOAM technology is a standout – it delivers an incredibly plush, cushioned ride that absorbs energy beautifully and keeps you feeling fresh even after a full day’s walk. Combined with the Ortholite Impression FitBed, it creates a level of comfort that’s hard to match.

The upper construction features buttery soft leather and performance-coated mesh, offering a lightweight, athletic feel with a sleek silhouette – and crucially, it’s 100% waterproof. I loved the feel of the materials; they flex naturally with your foot and add to the overall lightweight performance.
Underfoot, the traction system is designed using multiple shapes and patterns to handle the different forces and pressures of the golf swing across various lies and surfaces. While the theory works well, and it performs nicely in dry conditions, I did find the Quantum a little less grippy compared to some of the leading spikeless rivals, especially when the ground got wet or soft.
FootJoy has clearly drawn on its reputation as the No.1 shoe in golf here – the Quantum is built on a player-first platform, where walkability, all-day comfort, and modern styling come first, backed by real performance.
Final Verdict: 22.5/25
The FootJoy Quantum has been an absolute revelation for me, and if this were just about comfort, it’d be a 5/5 every day. But they aren’t the most stable spikeless shoe on the market, and they won’t win any awards for waterproofing during a biblical rainstorm. But they’re still very strong in those departments and, coupled with the sheer comfort, they’re almost unbeatable. I wore them for the majority of last year, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
If you want a shoe that feels amazing from day one, looks great throughout the golfing year, and keeps your feet fresh through even the longest rounds, the Quantum should be right at the top of your list. FootJoy has almost nailed the modern golf shoe formula with this one – just tweak that logo, slightly improve the grip, and ensure the next iteration is fully waterproof, and it will be the perfect golf shoe.
