What’s In The Bag: Tony Finau (June 2025 Update)

What golf clubs and ball does Tony Finau use? Our in-depth review of what’s in the bag of the five-time PGA Tour winner
Tony Finau had his best year in 2022, where he sealed his third win in seven starts and his fifth PGA Tour title with a dominant display at the Houston Open in November of that year, finishing 16-under-par to win by four shots. Long considered a nearly man, Finau has now put together a wide array of victories on the PGA Tour, building up his list steadily but surely over the recent years to present a quality resume of wins.
Victory in the Cadence Bank Houston Open followed his back-to-back victories at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic in July of the same year.
The American-Samoan also joined Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Vijay Singh, Jason Day, and Dustin Johnson on an illustrious list of players who have won three times in a calendar year by three or more shots on the PGA Tour.

“To be consistently great takes a full game both mentally and physically and I feel like, honestly, my physical game is starting to match up to my mental,” he said. “I’ve always been tough; I’ve always been strong mentally. Having a game that matches that is, I think, a great combination and I’m starting to see that with myself.”

Arguably the American’s most impressive win to date, Finau was just the seventh Tour winner in the past 20 years to lead the field in both Driving Accuracy and Greens in Regulation, and he was second in Strokes Gained.

“I’ve become a very precise, precision player. I always have enough in the tank when I feel like I need it,” he said. “It’s a luxury to have speed. At the end of the day, it’s always been a luxury for me. So being as precise as I am now off the tee, it’s a fun game hitting from the fairway a lot.
“I didn’t hit a lot of fairways growing up. I hit it very, very far, but that occasional hook, duck hook or slice was right around the corner, and it’s nice to have the type of control that I had over the driver this week for sure.”

Victory lifted Finau to 12th in the world and boosted the fan favourite’s hopes of making a third successive Ryder Cup team, after he played a key role in the USA’s Presidents Cup win in 2022, going 3-1-0.
Tony’s 2022 form continued in early 2023, although he largely wasn’t able to recapture this magic as the season ran on, turning general Top-20 play into an inconsistent selection of Missed Cuts and mid-table finishes.
Where he did find a highlight, however, was with victory seemingly out of the blue at the Mexico Open. The American has done well there in previous visits, so an air of confidence was certainly around him and he took home another trophy for his cabinet.

Finau presented improved general play through the 2024 season, with more Top-25 finishes than the previous year allowed for, although he was unable to convert his play into victory, with his best finish coming at the Valero Texas Open in Houston – a Tied-2nd alongside Scottie Scheffler, both losing out to Stephen Jaeger on the final round Sunday.
With roughly half the season gone in 2025, Finau will be looking to reassert himself in a game that now has some huge names in it, but maybe none of them as uniquely loved as he is, with fans ready for him to find a way to come back out on top.
