How we test golf balls

We're dedicated to making sure that we at Today's Golfer are clear and transparent on how we test equipment, so you know you can trust the information that you read.

This is the largest and most detailed golf ball test we’ve ever conductedand one of the most extensive in the industry. Working with Loughborough University’s Sports Technology Institute and supported by Ping, we’ve put 62 golf balls through a rigorous, robot-led testing processdelivering 2,232 shots of reliable, repeatable data to help you find the best ball for your game.

Using an R&D (Research & Development) swing robot, just as the brands do, is exceptionally costly, lengthy, and complicated, but it means we can give you clean, comparable results across all 62 balls and pinpoint how each model performs for different swing profiles.

We tested every ball at three distinct swing speeds (slow, mid, fast) to reflect the full spectrum of amateur golfers. We captured and analysed distances, spin rates, launch angles, peak heights, and descent angles in detail. Loughborough’s indoor lab gave us a fully controlled environment - critical when you’re hitting thousands of shots over multiple weeks. Indoor testing pairs perfectly with Foresight GCQuad, which captures all critical launch and spin data within the first 18 inches after impact.

Before conducting any equipment tests at Today’s Golfer, we ask ourselves ‘What question are we trying to answer?’, and work on the most appropriate methods to answer it.

Three key principles we consider are:

  1. Validity – does the study measure what we say it’s measuring?
  2. Accuracy – how close is the measurement to the true value?
  3. Reliability – would we see consistent results if we repeated the test?

And in the case of quantifying the performance characteristics of 62 different golf balls, we believe that the combination of a robot-controlled swing with industry-leading launch monitor technology is the gold standard.

We updated the driver swing speeds to better mirror real-world averages while still representing the full range of golfers. We then aligned our 7-iron speed to the average driver speed, for consistency, before making a big change to our wedge shot, switching from a full PW in 2024 to a partial 56º shot in 2025 to replicate a 40-yard shot.

From 22 ball/club/flight variables recorded by GCQuad, we distilled six on-course-meaningful metrics:

  1. Ball speed (mph)
  2. Launch angle (°)
  3. Backspin (rpm)
  4. Carry distance (yds)
  5. Height (yds)
  6. Descent angle (°)

This year saw us undertake a compression test for the first time, helping us to understand how golf balls behave under applied compressive force, and more importantly, how close this score is to those published by manufacturers. Alongside the experts from Loughborough University and advice received from the R&A, we devised a bespoke compression test that measured the deformation of 18 balls of each model (1,116 trials) using Instron 3365 force equipment.

Cycles: Pre-conditioning at 200 lbf to address Mullins effect, then two 100 lbf cycles with 15-second gaps.

Reporting: We used the second cycle to determine the compression value.

Method: Balls were “gently squeezed” from 8–100 lbf, measuring deformation in tiny fractions of an inch; we then applied the standard deformation formula to obtain each ball’s compression rating.

Interpretation: More deformation = softer (lower number); less deformation = firmer (higher number).

We began with a shortlist of 80, analysed usage data and search trends, and reduced to 64. Two models were unavailable (one delayed launch, one withdrawn), leaving 62 balls for testing. Of the 62 balls, 45 are in their current generation and tested for the first time in 2025. Seventeen also appeared in our 2024 test; we retested them, so every result comes from identical conditions – data from different years should not be compared directly. To reflect the market, we included multiple 2-piece, 3-piece, 4-piece, and 5-piece balls. Three-piece models are split into Club Golfer and Tour-Level categories based on professional usage and our expert assessment of each model’s positioning.

Our golf ball testing doesn't begin and end with robot testing. We also test every golf ball on-course to provide you with our personal experiences. With the robot providing us with copious data points, with our on-course testing, we're primarily focusing on what a robot can't tell us - feel, feedback, response, durability, and overall experience. Of course, we are also looking at performance, but without the numbers.

Every golf ball we test on-course is tested in the same way. We start at the short game area and putting green before taking it out onto the golf course to put it to the ultimate test.

Regardless of our preferences when it comes to golf balls, we ensure every golf ball is tested fairly and objectively. Whether we're testing a 2-piece or 4-piece golf ball, they are all viewed in the same manner. Our verdicts are based on what the golf ball is designed to do. For instance, if we're testing a distance golf ball, we don't expect outstanding short-game spin and control, so that's factored in to our review. If a distance golf ball doesn't stop on the greens, it will lose points, but it won't score nothing because that's not the main function of the golf ball.

On-course testing is hugely important because while the robot can provide you with all the data, it can't tell you how a golf ball performs in a real-world situation. As TG's resident golf ball expert, I test the majority of the golf balls at my home course, Cleveland Golf Club, a links golf course situated in the North East of England. Playing where I do, I am exposed to all weather conditions, so every golf ball is put to the ultimate test. Irrespective of the conditions or how we played, each golf ball is judged fairly on its performance - not ours.

We’ve tested the most popular and most-played TaylorMade golf balls on an R&D robot and on-course to help you determine which is the best golf ball for your game.

I wonder if TaylorMade ever gets bored of being one of the best manufacturers for everything in golf!? They are very well regarded for their quality equipment, and their golf balls are some of the best in the business. Whether you want to play with the best cheap golf balls or ones used by Rory McIlroy, TaylorMade has you covered, and we’ve tested the most-plated models on both an R&D robot, and on-course, to help you decide which is best for your game.

Who doesn’t want to play with the same balls as Rory McIlroy or Charley Hull? TaylorMade’s best premium golf balls are a serious competitor to Titleist’s Pro V1 which are the #1 golf ball on Tour. One thing TaylorMade does exceptionally well is that they have a ball perfect for all golfers – even their non-female specific models are some of the best ladies’ golf balls.

Since being founded in 1979, TaylorMade has continually strived to produce exceptional equipment worthy of being used by the best players in the world (something we don’t expect to change despite the golf ball rollback going ahead). As well as delivering on this, they offer amazing products for beginners and high handicappers – including very reasonably priced golf balls that offer fantastic value.

Robot test verdict

The TaylorMade TP5x steps up into a league of its own off the tee at the 78mph driver swing speed. It's a yard longer than the second-best performing golf ball and 0.4mph faster. At 93mph, TP5x is strong once again, being the fastest golf ball and the second longest.

Off-the-tee performance of the TP5x at both swing speeds is impressive, and it helps it achieve the bronze medal for off-the-tee performance. At 114mph, there is a drop-off in performance, but not enough to hinder the TP5x's overall score.

Approaching and playing around greens, the TP5x isn't as high-spinning as the TP5, but this model is sold as a low-spinning golf ball. With that in mind, it delivers a good amount of spin with the 7-iron (4,609rpm) and 40-yard pitch shots (6,042rpm).

TP5x delivers fast ball speeds, which makes it a very efficient golf ball. If you prioritise distance, the TP5x has to be in your thoughts, but not if you have a quick swing speed. If you're looking for more spin and control, I'd suggest looking at the TP5 instead.

On-course verdict

I'm very split between whether I prefer the firmer and more distance-oriented TP5x or the softer and higher-spinning TP5. If I'm being honest, my game benefits much more from a higher-spinning golf ball, so I think I have to side with Rory on this one and go for the TP5.

The reason I'm split is because I much prefer the firmer feel and response of the TP5x. I'm not particularly interested in the extra distance the TP5x offers because I'd much rather give up a couple of yards off the tee in exchange for putting the ball a couple of yards closer from the fairway.

The TP5x is well represented on Tour, despite a couple of players - including Rory - moving over to the TP5. It's clear to see why this five-piece golf ball is popular on Tour and in the amateur ranks, because it is solid from tee to green with an emphasis on eeking out a couple more yards.

I'm slightly in favour of the TP5, but if you ask me again in a couple of months, but opinion could well have changed.

Robot test verdict

The TaylorMade TP5 is known for being TaylorMade's higher-spinning Tour-level golf ball. It gained popularity on Tour over the last year, having been put in play by Rory McIlroy and one of the best iron players in the world, Collin Morikawa.

A big reason why Tour pros and amateurs elect to play TP5 is because of how soft it is and how well it behaves around the greens. TP5 is the third-highest-spinning golf ball in the entire test (6,100rpm) from the 40-yard pitch shot, and that's good enough for the silver medal in the four- and five-piece category.

Also, TP5 emerged from our robot test as being very impressive for approach play, producing good distance (156.3 yards), the third steepest descent angle (45.3°), the second-highest backspin (4,823), and fastest ball speeds (109mph). However, none of that was good enough to earn the TP5 an award because its carry distance consistency wasn't strong enough.

At slower swing speeds, TP5 is the fourth-best-performing golf ball off the tee. At quicker and moderate swing speeds, the performance isn't as consistent.

If you're looking for a golf ball to help you out around the greens, the TP5 has to be on your list. There's a good reason why so many Tour stars and amateur golfers love TP5, and you might end up being the same once you give it a go.

On-course verdict

I might not be on the same level as some of the TaylorMade Tour players who elect to use TP5 over TP5x, but I think I'm with them on this one.

I love the firmer feel of the TP5x, but I think it's hard to look beyond the TP5s strong greenside performance.

With TP5, you're guaranteed a golf ball that's going to behave if you miss a green from the fairway (or rough). This can be vital in helping you get up and down and save par.

My answer on TP5 vs. TP5x has changed over the years, but currently I'm in the TP5 camp.

Robot test verdict

The TaylorMade Distance+ is towards the top of the leaderboard at all three driver swing speeds, which is exactly where you'd expect it to be. However, we didn't expect it to perform as well in approach play performance as it did.

The Distance+ is the bronze medal winner for tee to green performance at 78mph, and while a factor of that is its off-the-tee performance (161yds carry distance and 113mph ball speed), a greater factor is its approach play performance.

Generating 4,596rpm makes this the third-highest-spinning golf ball, and with a descent angle of 45.1°, it's the third-steepest landing two-piece golf ball. Definitely not what we expected of a distance model.

Sadly, spin does drop around the greens. For short game performance, the Distance+ is the lowest-spinning golf ball of the entire test (3,685rpm).

However, given how strong the Distance+ performs from tee to green, you might not miss many greens. As long as you're able to play with more roll out on the greens, the Distance+ is a great golf ball at an amazing price.

On-course verdict

I really like the TaylorMade Distance+, I think it's a much better golf ball than many people will imagine.

One area that really impresses me on course is this model's short game performance. I know it didn't perform well in our robot test, but on the golf course, I've never had an issue stopping this golf ball quickly, playing around the greens.

This is a really solid golf ball from tee to green, and one I recommend to anyone looking for a cheaper golf ball that performs everywhere on the golf course.

Robot test verdict

The TaylorMade Tour Response is highly thought of at Today's Golfer, but every year this golf ball has featured in our robot test, it's been somewhat underwhelming.

There's not much to grumble about with how the Tour Response performed this year, other than it's the second-lowest-spinning golf ball in this category around the greens (5,353rpm backspin).

In every other area - off the tee, tee to green, and approach play - the Tour Response is a very middle-of-the-road golf ball, which isn't a bad place to be. We just have higher expectations. Especially when a good few of us know how well this ball performs on-course.

From the fairway, the Tour Response is again a low-spinning golf ball (4,249rpm), but it's not as far down that rankings as it is when playing around the greens.

Off the tee, you won't get a ridiculously long golf ball, nor will you get a massively high-spinning model; it's very average. That's not an insult. With Tour Response, you have a reliable golf ball that's easy to enjoy playing with.

On-course verdict

Off the tee, I was blown away by how well this golf ball performed, I remember the original Tour Response was slightly shorter for me compared to premium golf balls. However, that definitely isn’t the case with the 2025 Tour Response.

The second hole at Cleveland Golf Club measures 477 yards from the blue (winter) tees and I was left with 163 yards for my second shot. I don’t think I’ve had that little distance in since summer when the ball rolled out on the links.

Distance continued to be very strong throughout the round, the ball launched through the window I wanted it to, and the ball flight was very penetrating which enabled me to optimize distance.

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft has emerged from our robot test as one of the lowest-performing golf balls of the entire test - definitely the lowest-performing TaylorMade golf ball.

If you're in the market for a 2-piece TaylorMade golf ball, I'd suggest opting for the Distance+.

The SpeedSoft performed best in short game performance, where it still finished below the test average for backspin (5,596rpm) - ninth in this category and 41st overall.

We're somewhat disappointed by the performance of the SpeedSoft in our robot test, because a couple of us at TG have played with this and the Ink version on-course and loved it.

It might be that you have to give it a go yourself to make up your mind. However, if you're unsure, I wouldn't take the leap.

Pros

  • Ultra-soft feel from low-compression core

Best TaylorMade golf balls: FAQs

  • Are TaylorMade TP5s as good as Titleist Pro V1s?

While TaylorMade's TP5 golf balls are comparable to Titleist's Pro V1s, it's completely dependent on who you ask as to what you'll get as an answer for this question. However, my answer is that they are definitely as good, and in some respects they are better - especially when looking at dispersion from our robot test. Other golfers will argue that Pro V1s are better, which is completely understandable considering their popularity among amateurs and their usage on Tour. Whichever golf ball you lean towards, both are quality premium golf balls to enjoy using.

  • Do many pros play with TaylorMade golf balls?

If you dive into the bags of Tour players, you'll find the majority of them play with Titleist's Pro V1 or Pro V1x. However, the majority of TaylorMade staffers play with their TP5 or TP5x golf balls which are their premium golf balls and one of the best on the market. TaylorMade's golf balls are popular on every Tour from the PGA to the LPGA.

  • What golf ball does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy is currently playing with the TaylorMade TP5x golf balls and has been for quite some time now - he doesn't look like changing anytime soon!

  • How do the 2024 TP5 and TP5x differ from the previous 2021 models?

The TP5 is now in its 4th generation and the big new story for 2024 is a new SpeedWrap core additive. The idea allows TaylorMade’s super smart engineers to lower the density of the TP5’s core, so there’s less space for sound to travel inside. Less space means a lower audible sound, which means engineers can create a faster construction (essentially a firmer ball that feels and sounds like a softer one) which of course translates to added distance.

By controlling the sound of the core, faster mantle layers are added in much the same way as how the company uses SpeedFoam to enhance sound while supporting a thinner face in the brilliant P790 irons. Incredibly the idea is so good if you dropped a new SpeedWrap TP5 core from head height onto a tiled floor alongside a previous one the softer-sounding product would also be the fastest and longest. So, the new TP5 is a win-win for sound/feel and speed/distance.

  • Is it true the 2024 TaylorMade TP5 and TP5x are long when hit with an iron?

TaylorMade believes the TP5 and TP5x are very long golf balls with mid and long irons, so much so rumor has it, Rory McIlroy saw ball speed gains of 2mph while testing the new models. In typical TaylorMade fashion they’re so confident in their design they’re running challenges throughout the season to show their models will gain golfers 5 yards of carry distance in just five shots against their preferred ball of choice. Staff golf ball player Rickie Fowler commented after going through the brand's fitting process, “I’m fine hitting 5-iron 220 yards, but now I can get to 227 yards that’s a half club less which is a serious gain in one generation”.

  • How different is the TaylorMade TP5 and TP5x Pix 3.0 design?

TaylorMade says to come up with the new 3.0 Pix pattern they’ve considered tour player and consumer feedback and as the design wasn’t broken they’ve tweaked the ClearPath Alignment system rather than completely reinvent it. A new longer centreline on either side of the name serves up more precise alignment help when setting up on the green. The new Pix design has also evolved away from a ‘motion’ tringle to a new diamond shape with additional orange coloring being much more of a focus. The switch removes black from the center line and adds more color which enhances visibility and helps make alignment on the green much more user friendly.
