Spain is battling to stage the Ryder Cup for the second time…on a brand new course which will be made especially for the bi-annual event.
The Royal Spanish Golf Federation today confirmed that Valdeloshielos Finca Tres Cantos will be the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup… if Madrid is chosen to host the Europe v USA clash in eight years time.
The area on which sports and leisure facilities will be constructed for the hosting of the Ryder Cup is municipal property and is located in the west of Tres Cantos, with an area of approximately two hundred twenty-eight acres.
The chosen site has significant infrastructure – it’s located only 26km from Madrid with access via train, bus or the M-607 motorway.
Two golf courses will be built on the Valdeloshielos site – the first, a medium-high difficulty course will be a strong candidate to become the host course of the 2018 Ryder Cup, while the second public course will be of average difficulty and will offer reasonably priced green fees that will make golf accessible to everyone.
With this project, Madrid is making a major effort to become the preferred host candidate and meet the demands of the Madrid population.
The course to be built in Tres Cantos will be the first course of international calibre in this area and will comply with strict environmental standards and ISO GEO. The facilities will also create an environmental legacy for the world of golf and the people of Madrid beyond the 2018 event.
Madrid has a long tradition in the world of golf and the infrastructure to make it a strong candidate for the 2018 tournament.
The Ryder Cup is the world’s third largest sporting event (behind the Olympics and football’s World Cup) in terms of turnover, leading to huge economic benefits for the host country and generating respect in the world of golf.
The 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club, Co. Kildare, provided 240 million euros to the Irish economy.
