Single-figure golfer wanting distance? Meet the new Callaway Apex Ai150 irons…

Callaway’s new addition to the Apex Ai family is set to push their technology to the limit, in an effort to produce a Player-oriented iron that still offers modern performance benefits

After the successful entries into the Apex franchise with the Ai200 and Ai300 irons last year, Callaway are now turning their attention to a new model, one that still offers the benefits of the Ai-driven technology but appeals to the more advanced player. Today, they’re introducing the Callaway Apex Ai150 irons to the market, and the new showcase piece is going to appeal to players well beyond just its good looks.

The Callaway Apex Ai150 Irons will be available from July 10th for fitting and pre-orders, with the new model hitting stores from July 25th. The irons will be priced at $1600 USD and £1399 GBP for a 7-piece (steel) set or $229.99 USD and £200 GBP per iron.

Building a Base

Callaway have started this journey by looking at one of the most popular irons they’ve produced in recent years – the Apex TCB. Rare to get hold of, for both pros and amateurs at times, due to its much sought-after nature, the TCB featured outstanding feedback as well as suiting the eyes of many of the best players in the world – Xander Schauffele took home two Major titles in 2024 while gaming a set.

For the Callaway Apex Ai150 irons, the company has taken this base and, quite literally, expanded it, helping to accommodate the new technology they wanted to introduce.

Engineers have kept the TCB profile, but widened the sole, thickened the top line, and made the entire face larger. You’ll also notice an increased offset to the Ai150 to better suit the target golfer for these clubs, as the TCB’s minimal amount doesn’t quite lend itself to the miss of most non-elite players.

Despite Callaway having widened the base of the Ai150, though, there’s still no reason to doubt a quality turf interaction thanks to the Tri-Sole three-way camber that has also been implemented.

Tri-Sole features relief on the trailing edge of the head to make the way the club exits the ground more consistently and cleanly for repeatable connection, as well as an increase of leading edge bounce through a pre-bevelled finish.

Player’s Precision and Control

“The Ai150 really completes the franchise for us; it gives us our fastest players iron. It gives us that iron head shape that the single-digit handicap wants in a way that brings the Ai smart face technology to that player. We’ve used the Ai Smart face for us to be able to increase speed while maintaining spin and launch.” – Brian Williams, Callaway VP of Research and Development

As you’d expect from the designers of the Elyte irons, Callaway’s most recent Game Improver series, the new Apex Ai150 is built to be fast off the face. This is why it includes the latest generation of their Ai Smart Face, the Ai10X.

Designed through machine learning in Callaway’s own supercomputer, a project they invested in some time ago with the Epic Flash series of metalwoods, the new 10X face features ten times the amount of control points compared to the previous iteration, giving you more speed across the entire surface, not just centered in two or three points like other brands might.

The Callaway Apex Ai150 is designed as a replacement for the Apex Pro and compliment the Ai200 and Ai300 models

With technology being brought across from the Game Improver series, you may be worried that there will be some loss of feel in the Apex Ai150, but Callaway are already addressing that concern.

With a 1025 Forged Hollow Body construction, the brand has combined a high-strength face design, made of 455 stainless steel in the 3 through 7-irons, with the soft carbon steel body to produce reduced vibration and smoother feedback. In the 8-iron and above, the face changes to a 17-4 steel, for even more feel in the scoring irons, where they don’t need to have as strong a material, where you want to be more creative when attacking closer greens.

As expected, there’s also internal tungsten weighting that’s been precisely positioned within the hollow sections to optimize the CG (Center of Gravity) for better launch conditions as well as a higher MOI (Moment of Inertia) to resist off-center strikes beyond just the help provided by the Ai10X structure.

The Callaway Apex Ai150 irons feature True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115g (R, S, X Flexes) steel shafts and Mitsubishi Chemical MMT in both 80g (R) and 90g (S) graphite shafts. The Golf Pride Z-Grip Rubber comes installed as the standard grip option.
