Needing only one more Major to complete his career Grand Slam, it seemed that life was playing a cruel joke on the man from Northern Ireland. Despite winning the third leg in his journey back in 2014 at The Open Championship, it had been over a decade since Rory McIlroy had won one of the four biggest events in golf.

Pressing forward with the lead during a final round that had already seen some incredible twists and turns in its story, McIlroy found himself standing on the final tee box at Augusta National’s iconic golf course with a one-shot lead.

This hole also goes by the name Holly, so named for the Holly trees that line either side of the fairway. An alleyway of greenery that curves gently from left to right, and featuring a wide bunker down the left side that is well within the Irishman’s range, this tee requires absolute precision.

Unfortunately, McIlroy failed to capitalize on his drive and was forced back to the 18th tee to begin a playoff against England’s Justin Rose.

Once more, he produced perfection, splitting the fairway again in a moment where he needed to completely trust his driver. This time, McIlroy would make the most of his tee shot, hitting a second shot to within a few feet before converting his birdie to take home the green jacket and make history with the completion of the career Grand Slam, only the 6th man to do so in the modern era.

You know that a golf course has a test in store for you when a collection of holes has its own name. The ‘Green Mile’ at Quail Hollow Golf Club is one of those formidable stretches, possibly the most terrifying of any on the PGA Tour.

Featuring the 529-yard Par 4 16th, the 223-yard Par 3 17th, and the 494-yard Par 4 18th, only three players navigated this water-laced finish under par when the PGA Championship last visited in 2017. It’s a brutal set of holes, one that requires your utmost control to pass through without costing you position on the leaderboard.

In Round Three of the 2025 competition, Scottie Scheffler had managed to par both of the initial two holes of the Green Mile and was waiting to tee off on his final hole of the day. With a flowing stream and thick-rough running all the way down the left side of the fairway, and trees blocking anything that misses right, precision is at a premium, especially when holding a two-shot lead as Scheffler did.

A mess of a hole here, and he could be walking into the clubhouse having given up his advantage in the final round to the chasing Alex Noren.

Scheffler’s play was a bold one. Scottie would take full advantage and come away with another Birdie for an 11-under total through 54 holes.

What could have been a capitulation to the field ended with an extension, improving his lead to three shots to create a commanding position for his Sunday success, and his third career Major.

J.J. Spaun – The US Open

He may be considered the least prestigious golfer of the three major champions in 2025, but he could well be the grittiest competitor of them. After a nightmare start that would’ve destroyed the confidence of many, J.J. persevered his way back into contention at a punishing, rain-soaked Oakmont Country Club before arriving at the 17th.

With Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre already in the clubhouse and matching Spaun’s current 1-over par lead, and playing partner Tyrrell Hatton only one back at plus-two, the driveable Par 4 presented the ultimate in risk-reward challenge.

Land it right, and JJ would be looking at a chance for Birdie, or even an Eagle, to break clear of the chasing pack. Make a mistake and he’d be opening the door to both of the Brits.

With his Titleist GT3 driver and Fujikura Ventus Black VeloCore+ 6-X in hand, Spaun hit an outstanding cut to a mere 20 feet away from the flagstick, an incredible shot considering the pressure bearing down on him, to earn himself a simple two-putt birdie and take the lead with only one hole to go.

He would follow this remarkable drive with another solid one on 18, before holing an incredible putt for a final Birdie to seal his US Open victory and be the only man under par for golf’s most challenging Major.

Scottie Scheffler – The Open Championship

For many, the winner of the 2025 Open Championship seemed a bygone conclusion at the start of the day. Scottie Scheffler, world number one, held a four-shot lead over his nearest challenger, Haotong Li, and after birdie-ing the first hole, didn’t seem like he would relent.

He would birdie two of the next six to arrive on the 8th hole at 17-under par, but there would be trouble ahead for the Texan. Failing to get the ball out of a fairway bunker on his first attempt, Scheffler left the green with a Double Bogey, showing a chink in the armor of an otherwise flawless display.

This is a man who isn’t afraid of the big moments, however.
