Matchplay Tips: Play Replay
Last updated:
Having played on nine international teams for the US, Stewart Cink knows a key to success in matchplay is to keep the format fresh. When Cink plays with his friends at home near Atlanta, they add twists that heighten interest. Twist No.1 is called Two-step. Cink explains: “Wherever my shot ends up, they get to pick up my ball, take two steps in any direction and drop it. That can mean heavy rough, even a bunker.” Twist No.2, is called Replay.
In lieu of handicap strokes, Cink’s buddies can ask him to replay a number of shots per round. “If I hit a shot stiff , I can count on them making me replay it. Even tour pros struggle to hit it close twice in a row.” Both games come with a twist to the twists. “Sometimes we play for push-ups,” Cink says. “The loser has to do them on command within 24 hours. It could be in front of our buddies at the clubhouse.”
