Scott close to a 62 and open history

By The Open 2012

Aussie ace Adam Scott came within a whisker – well, one hole – of Open immortality.

Scott lined up on the final hole needing a birdie to achieve a record-breaking Open score of 62. Alas, it wasn’t to be and he had to sign for a 64 after signing off with a bogey.

However, the talented Australian set a hot first round pace and equalled Tom Lehman’s score of 64 in 1996. American Lehman of course went on to lift the Claret Jug that year.

Scott is desperate to claim his first major title and follow in the footsteps of his longtime hero Greg Norman.

“Winning majors is what I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid,” he stressed. “They’ve always been my goals since I turned pro and I would say I haven’t achieved what I want to achieve until I win a major…or more.

“Seeing Greg win the 1993 Open at Royal St George’s really spurred me on – I’ve great memories of watching him play then and could probably tell you every shot he hit that Sunday!”

Now Scott is looking to build on his stunning start but he doubts whether conditions will be as kind from now on in, quipping: “It was just like a nice walk in the park today.”
