The target may be a snowman, the greens are white and the ball lacks a little roll, but there is snow doubt about it, pupils at Rednal Hill School in Birmingham love their golf…whatever the playing conditions.
The youngsters were taking part in an after-school club led by Abbey Golf Club PGA professional Dean Lake.
This kind of after-school activity (usually without the snow) is typical of the work organised through more than 300 school sport partnerships by leading golf charity the Golf Foundation, as it works with the national golf partnerships to grow the game.
These Rednal Hill pupils are playing Tri-Golf which is designed to get 5-11 year-olds enjoying golf games at school. If the youngsters want to pursue their golf as they get older, the Foundation works to create opportunities for children to continue their golf at golf clubs and driving ranges.
Rednal Hill Headteacher Graham Catt said: “What’s all this about closing golf courses in the snow! Some thought we were a bit barmy organising golf in the snow but it actually made the youngsters adapt their game to the challenge of a different surface, something they will have to do on different types of golf courses as they get older.”
Brendon Pyle, Development Manager of the Golf Foundation, added: “Playing in the snow like this actually shows how flexible and fun a game Tri-Golf is for young children and volunteers. It is designed to be played anywhere and you don’t need sun and perfect conditions to enjoy having a swing and learning about golf.”
