Soccer stars in golf challenge

A unique golf event launching this summer gives football fans the chance to represent their clubs on the course – and to play with their heroes.

The pro:fantastic Golf Challenge allows pairs of football fans from some of the country’s top clubs to play off in a Sky Sports televised regional final against local rivals, in September, before qualifying for a grand final at a top continental resort.

And they will be joined at the final by stars from their club’s past who will captain the team in the quest for the pro:fantastic Golf Challenge title.

A total of 22 English and Scottish teams will be represented and some of the biggest names in the clubs’ recent histories have thrown their weight behind the event.

Liverpool’s record goalscorer Ian Rush, Chelsea goal machine Kerry Dixon, Manchester United’s flying winger Lee Sharpe and West Ham’s Frank McAvennie are just four of the keen golfing ex-pros who have already expressed their desire to take part.

Rush enthused: “This is a fantastic idea. pro:fantastic has really hit the mark with this challenge. It’s a real Battle of Britain. I for one will be there!”

And Dixon said: “This really is a brilliant opportunity for football club supporters to make it into a major final of their own.”

The regional events, at top UK courses, will see around 30 pairs of supporters from each club playing in a two-ball Stableford format with the best pair from each club heading to an expenses paid grand final abroad, where they will enjoy accommodation, 18 holes of competitive, televised golf and a gala dinner with their footballing heroes.

Everybody competing at the regional finals will receive a golf shirt in their respective club colours, bacon rolls and coffee upon arrival, 18 holes of competitive, televised golf and a post-event hot buffet meal.

Places in the event are limited and cost £136.85 per person.
