TG Blog: Getting my handicap down

Friday 1st April
When I decided upon this challenge I had in mind that there would be distinct stages in my progress. Phase one was ‘novice’ (the part before I played golf), then ‘beginner’ (learning how to play golf) and phase three would start when I achieved an official handicap.
I could have applied for a handicap earlier in my progress but we always had it in mind to wait until six months were up. The aim was to start between 12 and 15. I missed. My handicap is 18.
My other target for March was to break 80. I’ve missed this too, although this was always a target of mine; my coach was targeting 85. I did score 40 for nine holes this week so I’m happy to take this as evidence of decent progress.
The next steps are to spend some more time working on fundamentals, then get to Scotland for some links golf with new friends, and then to start entering competitions and submitting more cards to work the handicap downwards (hopefully!).
I’m looking forward to Scotland. I’m fairly sure that links golf will show up every flaw in my game, but I will come back a better golfer for the experience. Whatever happens, I’m going to enjoy it and you can’t ask for anymore than that.
