England amateurs win golfing Ashes

England’s amateur golfers followed in the footsteps of our Test cricketers by producing two days of outstanding play to retain the Ashes in Australia.

The seven-man team followed up their impressive 11-3 victory at Royal Birkdale two years ago by dominating the action at Elanora Country Club near Sydney with a 13-5 victory.

They won three of the four sessions and halved the other to bring the curtain down on a highly successful trip Down Under in which Andy Sullivan won the New South Wales Medal and Jack Senior beat Sullivan in the final of the New South Wales Amateur.

In the Ashes, England finished the first day with a 6-3 lead after winning all three morning foursomes while a 2-1 success in the second day foursomes meant they needed to win just two of the six singles.

They claimed five of the six singles – Darren Wright and Ben Loughrey both claiming 5 and 3 wins, Jack Senior and Andrew Sullivan both claiming 2 and 1 wins and David Coupland winning the final match by 3 and 1.

Senior was England’s star performer, winning all four of his matches, while Stiggy Hodgson also finished with a perfect record of three wins from three.
