How to stop your golf clubs being stolen

We’ve all had rounds so bad we’ve considered throwing our golf clubs in the bin, but that should be our choice. You should never face the scenario where you go to fetch your clubs only to find they’ve gone missing without a trace.

Sadly, that is an all too common occurrence for UK golfers, with millions of pounds of equipment being stolen each year.

“Golfers shouldn’t have to put up with their extremely valuable clubs and other equipment being targeted by thieves,” says Lee Pointon, Inspector with York Police.

Marking your golf clubs can prevent them being stolen

York Police are offering golfers the chance to mark their golf clubs for free, making them less of a target for criminals.

“Marking your property is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from being a victim of crime,” says Pointon. Eagle-eyed criminals will spot the permanent engraving and realise that the property will be too difficult to sell on. Being able to trace the ownership of stolen property can also provide evidence that is vital in securing convictions.”

How to get your golf clubs marked – for free

The club marking is done by a peen marking machine that indents each club with a series of small dots to create a visible, permanent marker. The unique number is entered onto the national Immobilise property register database, vastly increasing the chances that it will be reunited with its owner if it is lost or stolen.

Police Community Support Officer Kieron O’Brien is leading the property marking driver they’re calling ‘Join Our Club’: “We’re teeing up a number of drop-in sessions throughout December, and I would encourage anyone interested to get in touch with me by emailing snayorknorth@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk. We’ll also be advertising property marking opportunities on Twitter, using the hashtag #joinourclub.”
