Golfer shoots 56, breaks course record by six shots… and loses?!

A jaw-dropping 56 smashed the course record by six shots – but a stableford miracle saw him finish second.
Imagine shooting a ridiculous 11-under-par 56. Breaking your home course record by six shots. And not winning the comp.
That’s exactly what happened at Wolston Park Golf Club in Queensland, Australia, last week.
Matthew Frohmuller, the club’s head greenkeeper and a +3 handicapper, delivered the round of his life in a Saturday stableford at the par-67 layout just outside Brisbane.
You’d think that would be enough to waltz away with the win. But the handicap system had other ideas.
Frohmuller’s plus-handicap meant he had to give three shots back, meaning his gross 56 gave him 44 stableford points.
Enter Trish Johnson.
In just her second-ever competition round, Johnson shot 95 off a 41 handicap, good for a whopping 51 points – blitzing the field and leaving Frohmuller in second place despite his course-record effort.
Her stellar showing triggered a huge handicap slash from 41.5 to 24.5.
Matthew Frohmuller
- Score: 56 (-11)
- Handicap: +3
- Stableford points: 44
- Broke course record by 6 shots
Trish Johnson
- Score: 95
- Handicap: 41
- Stableford points: 51
- Only her second competition round
If you’re thinking it’s unfair that a +3 handicap was in the same division as a 41 handicap, Frohmuller’s sister, Kiara, explained what went down:
“I’m from Wolston Park and I also played that day. The main competition for the day was a 4BBB, with a stableford medley running in conjunction. Our normal Saturday comp, women and men have their own divisions, and the men are graded. So this is not a normal occurrence and sucks that he had the round of his life during a teams event.”
Still, Frohmuller will go down in club history for his 56 – despite the competition result. And Trish Johnson will always be able to say she took on a +3 handicapper who broke the course record by six – and left him seven points in her wake.
