‘That’s the biggest praise I can heap on him’: LIV Golf star gives verdict on Donald Trump’s golf

Donald Trump can "get it around the course", according to LIV Golf star Lee Westwood.

Lee Westwood says he has played a lot of golf with Donald Trump. So what does the European Tour legend think of the president’s game?

Donald Trump’s love of golf is no secret.

From buying plots of land to develop a host of championship-calibre courses to renovating some of the most famous layouts in the world, the US president has amassed quite the portfolio.

He also loves getting out and playing himself. So much so, in fact, that there is a website – Did Trump Golf Today? – that tracks how many days he spends out of his office and on the course.

However, amid some YouTube appearances and questionable accounts of club championship victories, it’s tough to really know what his game is like.

One man who is well placed to dish the dirt is Lee Westwood. The Englishman, a 27-time winner on the PGA and DP World Tours who now plies his trade on LIV Golf, spent countless hours on the course with Trump when he lived in the US.

During a guest appearance on UK radio station talkSport, Westwood began: “I lived in Florida from 2012 to 2015 and I actually played with Donald Trump quite a lot. I used to get a text: ‘Are you doing anything this afternoon?’ And we’d go down and I’d play in a twoball with him.

“So I’ve spent quite a lot of time with President Trump.”

Asked what Trump is like to spend time with, Westwood added: “As a man, I think he’s a nice human being. I had my family around him and he treated my family fantastic and with respect.

“As a golfer, he gets it round the golf course in his own way. He’s a fantastic putter. That’s the biggest praise I can heap on him.”

It’s not the first time a top tour player has spoken about Trump’s game. Rory McIlroy made an extraordinary claim about the 79-year-old earlier this year, while Trump has also featured on Bryson DeChambeau’s ‘Break 50’ YouTube series, which has racked up more than 15 million views and counting.

Trump has also made appearances in LIV Golf pro-ams and has hosted some of the breakaway circuit’s events at his venues since its inception in 2022.
