PGA Tour 2K25 review: We’ve played Tiger Woods’ latest video game!
Last updated:
The GOAT is once again the main man for PGA Tour 2K25 – but who else is featured and, more importantly, when will you be able to play?
PGA Tour 2K25 is finally here! (Almost.)
With the tagline ‘Next Round, Best Round’ the most anticipated golf video game since, well, its predecessor is about to be available for you to buy, so let’s dive in and see what’s new…
Who’s in PGA Tour 2K25?
First up there’s the cover stars. Tiger Woods is back, of course, but this time he’s not alone. Joining the 15-time major champion as the faces of PGA Tour 2K25 are US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and seven-time tour winner Max Homa.

On launch, the trio will feature on a roster of 11 playable PGA Tour and LPGA stars, which also includes Justin Thomas, Lydia Ko, Tony Finau, Tom Kim, Rose Zhang and Brooke Henderson.
Then, of course, there’s you.
You want to be able to live out your dream of playing in the big leagues, right? On top of the standard multiplayer and online modes, 2K have created the most diverse, customizable ‘MyPlayer’ experience to date.
The ‘MyPlayer Progression System’ allows you to work your way to legend status via a range of new skill-based training methods and pre-tournament events.
There is also more equipment and apparel available than ever before – including Callaway, Titleist, Cobra, Mizuno, Adidas, Nike, Puma, and Malbon – so you can make sure your player is geared up with your favorite brand.
Which tournaments can you play in PGA Tour 2K25?
For the first time in PGA Tour 2K, you can tee up in major championships, with The Open, US Open, and PGA Championship all making their debut in the franchise.
“Some of my most iconic moments, unforgettable hole outs and dominant victories took place at the majors,” Woods said ahead of the launch. “In PGA Tour 2K25, players can step onto the tee box and create unforgettable moments as their customizable ‘MyPlayer’, my fellow cover athletes Matt Fitzpatrick and Max Homa, or even me.”
You can also compete in the PGA Tour’s flagship event and so-called ‘fifth major’, the Players Championship.
Which leads nicely into…
Which golf courses can you play in PGA Tour 2K25?
There is absolutely nothing like being able to tee up on the finest golf courses on the planet – and if you can’t do it in real life then this is the next best thing.
PGA Tour 2K25 will feature 29 licensed courses when it launches – including the home of the Players Championship, the infamous Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.
And those three major additions? Well, you’ll be able to play their 2025 host venues too with Royal Portrush, Oakmont, and Quail Hollow all expertly recreated in digital form, as are 2K classics such as Pebble Beach and Riviera.

The Old Course at St Andrews will also be available to play not long after the launch date.
There is also a Topgolf mode for you to work on your game, while the industry-leading Course Designer has had a revamp and allows you to lay out your own tracks or play those designed by other players.
What about the technical stuff?
If you want to get super nerdy, 2K have advanced the mechanics of the game which the company says “truly nails the feel of handling a golf club”. These include a new ‘EvoSwing’ system with new shot types, ball flights, and improved roll physics.
There is also a new ‘Attributes Point’ system and upgraded ‘Skill Trees’ which allows players to truly represent themselves and their own unique style through the ‘MyPlayer’ customization tools.
What’s the TG verdict?
I was fortunate enough to be invited down to 2K HQ in London where, when I wasn’t harassing the Rockstar staff for a GTA 6 release date, I spent a couple of hours getting my teeth into PGA Tour 2K25.
As always, the game opens with the opportunity to build your own character in the MyPlayer mode. There are so many options and things to change here that I don’t even know where to start most of the time, so I just find myself picking a pre-determined figure with nice hair and crack on.
Then a phone call! From an agent! This is new. I like it. How fun. My agent tells me I am the hottest new prospect on the PGA Tour and I must gather 10 million social media followers by the end of the season. This is where it gets really fun – with each interaction there are three options ranging from humble to downright cocky. This, it turns out, will determine your personality type.
Right, let’s get to swinging a golf club. Now I’ve played so much PGA Tour 2K21 and 2K23 in the last few years that I’m pretty sure I’m close to some sort of world record. So I’m keen to see the differences.
Immediately the graphics are noticeably improved. The backdrop as your player stands on the range is so awe-inspiring you almost feel like you’re in the Rocky Mountains.
Check out this side-by-side of the famous 7th at Pebble Beach and you’ll catch my drift:
I’m playing on an Xbox controller and the swing mechanics are largely the same – pull back on the stick then push up for the downswing and follow through – but what’s happening on the screen has been massively improved. It’s just – what’s the best word? – cleaner.
Putting is noticeably harder – and this is where the new training features will come in handy. And by harder I don’t mean worse, it’s just a different system to previous editions and requires you to really focus. A bit like real life, I suppose.

In the game, it’s clear that the plan here is to make a golf game that suits both the casual and the obsessive player. Want to just swing and go? Absolutely fine. Want to spend hours stressing over the fact your driver clubface is open by a tenth of a degree? Knock yourself out!
After your round there’s a full debrief from your agent who takes you through how many virtual dollars you made and how many virtual followers you acquired. There are even text messages. I have one from Rose Zhang, who would like to start a rivalry. Pick on someone your own size, Rose.

I accept – because why not? – and move onto my all-important press conference where I answer questions from publications such as Golfer’s Digest and Golfing Glory Gazette while the personality bar will waver depending on your answer. It’s incredibly fun, but I have only played a couple of tournaments. I wonder if that novelty will wear off by the time I’m several seasons deep. We’ll see.
Now it’s not perfect. It doesn’t feel like enough of a fuss has been made around the three majors, which is a hell of a get for 2K. I understand it’s a PGA Tour game and those three majors are run by other bodies, but EA went all in on their Masters affiliation and it worked wonders for them. But that’s a minor gripe.
Other small irritations include the commentary team, which has not improved at all in the franchise and still grates. Luke Elvy is back with his book of clichés, and it still feels like Rich Beem is playing an exaggerated version of himself, while Henni Koyak offers very little.
Their scripts are clearly out of date, too. At one point while I was eyeing up a lengthy birdie, Elvy and Beem were discussing Xander Schauffele needing “to take his game to the next step” if he wants to have any kind of legacy in the game other than being an Olympic gold medalist. Schauffele, of course, won two majors in 2024.
Frustrating for the golf purist, sure, but casual fans won’t care and I’m certainly not going to let little things like that spoil my enjoyment of what is an incredibly good golf game.
The best ever? I’ll need to play it a little more. But the potential is there…
When is the release date for PGA Tour 2k25?
PGA Tour 2K25 will land on February 28, 2025 on Steam, PS5, and Xbox.
There will also be three editions – Standard, Deluxe, and Legend – with the number of content packs differing in each.
What’s more, anyone pre-ordering the Deluxe or Legend editions will be entitled to seven days of early access from February 21, 2025. And if that’s not enough, you’ll get to play as Chris McDonald – who you know better as Shooter McGavin from the Happy Gilmore films but they can’t call him that for obvious licensing reasons.
And that’s not all!
On February 4, 2K released a gameplay demo version of the game so you try it out now for a bit before it goes on general sale. And, we’re told, anything you create or achieve in the demo version can be carried over into the full game when you buy it. How cool is that?
Finally, how much will it set you back?
Launch prices for the three editions have been set at £64.99/$69.99 (Standard), £89.99/$99.99 (Deluxe), and £104.99/$119.99 (Legend).
If that’s not enough information, you can find out more over on the PGA Tour 2K25 website.
I’ll update this review as I play more. In the meantime, get yourself on the demo, and check out the YouTube video at the top of the page for a taste of what you can expect.
