Shane Lowry’s US Open goes from bad to worse with bizarre rules disaster

Shane Lowry's US Open unravelled further with a bizarre rules blunder on Friday, earning him a penalty stroke.

He was already out of the running, but Shane Lowry still managed to make headlines for all the wrong reasons during Friday’s second round.

The US Open is widely regarded as the toughest test in golf.

Narrow fairways, gnarly rough, lightning-fast greens — it’s the kind of setup that can drive even the world’s best players to distraction.

Need proof?

How about Shane Lowry — a major champion who’s been a professional golfer for almost 20 years — forgetting one of the most basic rules of the game during Friday’s second round?

Well outside the cut line, things went from bad to worse on the 14th hole when the Irishman picked up his ball on the green… without marking it first.

The result? A one-shot penalty.

It didn’t change much on the leaderboard, but it did at least spark a laugh between Lowry and playing partner Rory McIlroy, both of whom needed some light relief after being on the wrong end of an Oakmont battering.

“Probably one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done,” said Lowry after the round.

Lowry’s not the only one to fall foul of the rules at this year’s US Open — even defending champ Bryson DeChambeau had his own issues during Thursday’s opening round.
