How much will the US PGA Championship winner receive?

Today’s Golfer’s 2023 Major coverage is brought to you in association with TaylorMade.

Justin Thomas received a lot more than the PGA Championship title for his second men’s Major victory at Southern Hills Country Club.

As well as becoming a multiple Major champion, Thomas took home a cheque for $2.7 million from a purse of $15 million – the second-highest prize fund in the Major Championships (behind the US Open).

Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship for the second time with his victory at Southern Hills.

While the purse isn’t the largest in Major golf, the trophy most definitely is. The Wanamaker stands at 28 inches high (almost two-and-a-half feet and weighs 27lb (just under two stones).

The PGA of America named it after Rodman Wanamaker, a Philadelphia native and department store owner who was instrumental in the formation of the PGA of America in 1916.

Walter Hagen lost the original in 1925, blaming a taxi driver he’d asked to take it back to his hotel. It turned up in 1930, in a crate, and now resides at PGA HQ.

Phil Mickelson won the 2021 USPGA Championship at the age of 50

The winner gets to keep the Wanamaker trophy for their year as champion before receiving a smaller replica for good.

In the case of Thomas, victory secured him an invitation to the Masters, US Open, The Open, and The Players Championship for the next five years, as well as a lifetime exemption into the PGA Championship.

Collin Morikawa can play in the US PGA Championship for life after his 2020 win.

The champion also receives membership on the PGA Tour for the following five seasons and on the DP World Tour for seven seasons.

Then there are the world ranking points. Due to the prestige of the events, each of the year’s men’s Majors gives 100 Official World Golf Ranking points to the winner. For context, the Players Championship winner receives 80 points while all other tour events can offer a maximum of 80 depending on the standard of the field.

Southern Hills hosts the 2022 US PGA Championship.

And, of course, becoming a Major champion also provides Thomas with a place in the history books, countless bonuses, a host of new sponsorship opportunities, and increased coverage at future events.
