Can Jordan Spieth win the Open 2015?

Jordan Spieth is the bookies’ favourite to win the 2015 Open, but can he do it?

In his favour is form; he’s won both of this year’s Majors and comes to the event off the back of a hugely impressive win at the John Deere Classic last week.

Going against him is the fact that he’s won both of this year’s Majors and is therefore facing huge expectation to see whether he can complete the third leg of a possible calendar Grand Slam, plus the fact that the last time he visited the Old Course he was still an amateur.

The entire golfing world is on the edge of its seat to see if the 21-year-old can do it. We asked some of golf’s biggest names whether they’d back Spieth to win this week.

Paul Casey: “Fatigue could get in his way”

The only thing that’s going to be against Jordan and give other guys an advantage would be the jet lag. Fatigue is going to be the only thing that gets in his way from having a great championship this week. He’s young enough where he’ll probably overcome it with a good night’s sleep.

I’ve tried it various weeks, playing the week before, not playing the week before, and I think it ultimately depends on how you play and the attitude you carry coming out of the event. Coming off a win like he is this week, that’s massive momentum.

Sir Nick Faldo: “I think he’ll be in there”

What he’s doing is phenomenal. And he’s confident. He’s seeing the right shot. He’s visualising the shot. They’ve got their game plan, go and do it. He’s obviously got a very high golfing IQ.

I think he has a shot. I think he has the know-how to find a way to get the ball close to the hole. You have to plot – it’s exactly the same as Chambers Bay. You have to plot your yardage, where you’re going to land it, what you predict the bounce is going to be, the release – all sorts of things. They seem to be finding a way of doing that.

I think he’ll be in there, I really do. He’s playing too darned good and holing putts.

Tiger Woods: “He’s in great form”

He’s playing well, obviously. He’s won two Major championships and just won last week. Obviously he’s in great form. It’s just a matter of going out there and executing his game plan. That’s what he talks about a lot, formulating a game plan and executing it. This is a golf course in which you have to do that.

You have to be a very good lag putter because a good shot is sometimes going to be 40, 50, 60, 70 feet away. You just can’t get it close because the wind is blowing too hard. To be able to lag putt those putts stone dead is very key.

Paul Azinger: “The course sets up perfectly for him”

Jordan can handle it. My favourite thing about Jordan is that he is who we think he is. He’s just a good guy who’s got his act together, and he’s an old head on a young body. The golf course sets up very nicely for him, too. He’s a natural drawer of the ball. He’s longer than people think and it’s hard to get it close at St Andrews. And he’s the best in the world from 15 to 25 feet.

Mark O’Meara: “He can handle the pressure”

Could he win here? Absolutely. Is there going to be a lot of pressure on him? Absolutely. Can he handle it? I think he can.

The man himself, Jordan Spieth: “I’ve got plenty left in the tank”

I have got plenty left in the tank. I just want to put myself in position. I feel like if I do that, that same formula that I continue to talk about will kick in mentally.
