As we all know, Darren Clarke has transformed his short game in recent years. Before he won the 140th Open Championship at Royal St George’s, he worked hard on his chipping, knowing this would be a vital element come Open week.
One of the problems he identified with his chipping was that while playing shots his head would dip a few inches, during the stroke. And so, the weekend before his victory, he worked very hard at Royal Portrush with this chipping drill. By placing a stick on his throat while chipping, head movement is restricted to an absolute minimum.
